“A Superb and unprecedented hotel”
Reviewed 12 July 2008

This is quite simply the best hotel in Palm Springs; it is quite likely the best hotel in southern California. Nowhere i have ever stayed in 15 years has offered such immediate and genuine hospitality and such an incredibly well appointed and beautiful hotel. Everything the reviews say is correct, it may be difficult to believe but it is; this is one gem of a hotel.

I arrived, after some difficulty finding the hotel (Larry was very helpful on the phone) to be offered a personal tour of the hotel and a much appreciated cold beer. The outdoor aircon surrounding the pool had a great effect on the air quality and made the pool area, around which the hotel is laid out, a great place to sit and relax. The room was large, cool, tasteful, exceptionally clean and stocked with free items like coke and water, biscuits and snacks. The Kitchen was really new and clean and the bathroom was the best i have seen in quite some time.

After some time unpacking i had planned to go to a restaurant and Larry had given me sample menu's and rung the best three to find out when they were closing; but after 5 minutes by the pool i was ready to give in and stay poolside intot he night.

The hotel was quiet whilst i was there, it was June after all and mid-week; there are just 10 rooms which makes a perfect atmosphere and gives everyone some room; i would love to return outside of the hot season and witness the pit bbq and the atmosphere.

Unfortunatly i could only stay one day, but I will certainly be returning for a few days as soon as possible. This hotel is a destination for me, not a place to sleep!

This place felt like home from the minute we walked through the gate.
That is if your home is a beautiful desert paradise where you want for nothing and deal with the friendliest, most helpful people you will ever meet!
We're back in New Jersey now, but our memories of the Desert Riviera still make us smile.

When planning our 2 week trip around California, Palm Springs cropped up almost as an after-thought. Using Trip Advisor we discovered the Desert Riviera Hotel which at that time was rated #1 in Palm Springs and decided to book for just 2 nights.

Our experience with the hotel began before we even arrived when I happened to check my email from the hotel we were staying in Anaheim. Judy (the owners sister) had emailed me to check what time I was arriving so that she could cool the room for us!

Upon arrival the first impression is like walking onto the set of a sixties movie, with a gorgeous pool set in a landscaped garden bordered on 3 sides by the 10 rooms (Each with a door on to the garden).

Judy greeted us with cold bottles of water and showed to our room (Room 1). The rooms themselves are immaculate, with huge beds, flat screen TV's and Kitchen facilities (complete with microwave, blender, toaster etc) so you feel completely at home.

Our room had a just had a new remote control air-conditioning unit fitted by the owner Larry which seems typical of the people that own this hotel, as they always seem to be making sure everything is perfect for the guests.

The pool is divine, one of the cleanest we have ever experienced, complete with floats etc. There are plenty of comfy sun loungers and towels pool side and a hot tub (although this is best used in the evening). The hotel is completely self catering however the owners (Larry and Patty) are ever willing to offer you a beer or water if required. One afternoon Judy surprised us by bringing chilled strawberies coated in chocolate to the poolside as a refreshing treat.

Larry is a legend, and will ferry you to and from Palm Springs town in a Limousine for your evening meal which just added to the whole experience.

The owners will do anything possible to make sure you stay is relaxed and encourage guests to socialize with each other (which we really enjoyed) but there is certainly no pressure to do this and you can keep to yourself if that is your cup of tea.

When returning from dinner we spent an enjoyable couple of evenings drinking beer around the firepit in the beautifully lit garden - it really is paradise.

We enjoyed it so much that we decided to extend our stay by one night which was graciously accomodated by the owners without any problem what-so-ever.

So would we go back - definitely. Would we recommend this hotel - absolutely, you would be hard pushed to find better a better hotel anywhere.

From the moment we stepped into the lobby of the Desert Riviera, we knew that this trip was going to be one we would remember forever. Welcomed by the delightful Judy, we were led through all the wonders the motel had to offer its guests. Later in talking among ourselves, we decided the owners brainstormed a list of all the possible things they could do to make their guests feel pampered and at home. They then began the work needed to completely refurbish this motel from the 50’s. They accomplished their goal and more. The Desert Riviera is truly unique.
Staying at the Desert Riviera is like stepping back in time. Every detail of the complete renovation is true to the feeling of a motel from the 50’s.
The rooms are spotless, the furniture is new, and the beds are incredible. Included in your stay are all the possible amenities. These include: a sparkling pool; an endless supply of brightly colored beach towels; sunscreen; “goodies” in a basket on the table in the room; water and soda in the room’s mini refrigerator; a micro-wave; a phone that enables guests to make local, national, and international calls absolutely free; a well stocked library of DVDs, books and games; high definition TVs, and much more. In fact, if you can think of anything that would make your stay perfect, it is probably here. This includes 50’s cruisers available to go touring on your own and a limousine. The owners go out of their way to make sure everyone feels like family.
My husband and I came to Palm Springs with good friends hoping to find three relaxing days and three days of golf for the men. We found that and more. The Desert Riviera has five stars in our book, and we will be back. In fact, we didn't want to leave!

  • Liked — The Management was terrific and the environment was beautiful and relaxing
  • Disliked — We had to leave and return to reality.

This is maybe the best hotel I've ever stayed at, valuewise. Don't be fooled by the low price or the homey atmosphere, this is luxury. There is no better hotel for getting away from it all hands down.

I'd list everything you have available for free, but that's all on their website. When I arrived, they knew my name already. The first thing they told me was that they had lowered their rates and I'd be paying less. What hotel does that?

The folks that run this place seem to be in it for a good time. Regardless of their motivations, this is a fine hotel. They treated us like royalty during our stay.

  • Liked — The value of this comfortably sized place.
  • Disliked — In-room phones would be my only suggestion.

Anyone who's been to a lot of hotels knows the feeling: you walk in, and they immediately start nickel-and-diming you for everything. We had such a better experience at this hotel than we have at far more expensive ones, and everything was included. On top of that, the folks at the Desert Riviera know that owning a hotel is about hospitality, not just increasing the bottom line - and they know the difference between real hospitality and the hospitality you only give people who pay the most. Larry and Judy (I didn't get to meet Patty) were helpful, attentive, and most importantly, personable. It was like coming home to old friends. The rest of the reviews have already said it all; we will never have a reason to stay anywhere else when we're in Palm Springs. I only wish more hotels followed their model. They most certainly deserve the #1 spot they have!

My wife and I were looking for a getaway. We discovered the Desert Riviera through TripAdvisor, and we read the reviews. Having seen the large volume of extremely happy reviews, my wife and I made a reservation.

My internal pessimist wondered if the reviews were somehow rigged, as it is extremely rare to see so many people SO pleased/excited about anything. So, we drove out of Los Angeles to Palm Springs with our fingers crossed for a nice escape.

Our GPS brought us to the parking lot (it's not easy to see from the street). We got out of the car (into a record-breaking heat of 118) and opened the gate. We saw the pool and the rooms as we walked to the office. Instantly I knew that the previous reviewers were serious. It is a lovely property which, when photographed would shine in any magazine review of fine places to stay.

We met Judy in the office who offered us complimentary bottled water as we checked in. She went through her routine of explaining all the free products and services available (which you surely must have read about from other reviews).

We met with Larry (an owner) who was also very friendly, quick to share his story about how he and his wife came to own the hotel after moving from the very rainy Portland area.

Our room was very comfortable. It had a flat screen TV, and a separate kitchen area. It had complimentary snacks and water/soda in the fridge. It was meticulously clean. The only complaint about the room was that the air conditioner could not keep up with the record heat wave. When we brought this to Larry's attention he brought over fans, ice, checked in on us, offered to move us to another hotel, and just made us feel so relaxed that we ignored the warm room (at around 11:00 PM it was comfortable enough to fall asleep, and then was cool in the morning).

Although my wife and I love to turn the a/c down and sleep in the cold, this was not possible. We'd been spoiled by the powerful air conditioners in Las Vegas, where you could practically see your breath in the room on a baking July day. We've made a note to book our return trip outside of the June-Sept period for our next trip back. [NOTE – As we were departing, Larry mentioned that he was planning on replacing the air conditioner in the room we stayed in with a much stronger one, the following day]

You can see the pride that Larry and his family take in running a quality operation. It’s very obviously “their baby”. It's clear that they will do whatever it takes to make the customer happy. In a world of very poor customer service (often handled on the phone, from other countries), it feels great to be treated so nicely. Along with the lovely grounds, the fine service is a part of the experience of staying at the Desert Riviera Hotel.

We will return.

The only other observations which we made (which we would change if we could)

Loud Street - the property is adjacent to a busy street where the ongoing sounds of traffic can be heard. The piped-in music by the pool helps to offset this.

Jacuzzi Experience - while there is a switch to turn the bubbles off, we didn't see any controls for turning the waterjet off. It was loud enough to require my wife and I to shout at each other to carry a conversation.
