We returned to the Riviera Resort & Spa for our second stay in March - April 2011. We had high expectations given our great experience in 2009, and the hotel, staff, and overall experience "wow'd" us again! The Riviera is a beautiful property with great attention to detail in design and decor, and it was such a pleasure to step inside the chic lobby after our long journey and enjoy a cocktail in the Starlight Lounge after a quick and friendly check-in experience. Despite the resort being very busy with preparations for a special event we were attending, the staff members were smiling, pleasant, and greeted/welcomed us as we walked around the property. Our suite was clean, comfortable, and well-appointed. Throughout our stay, we enjoyed various meals and drinks poolside, at Circa 59, and in the Sidebar Lounge, and each time our servers and bartenders were friendly, welcoming, and attentive - again, despite very busy conditions! Room attendants were prompt with towels when needed, and offered maid service even when it wasn't necessary. The pools and grounds were beautiful, clean, and well-maintained. When we (sadly) departed, several employees wished us happy travels and told us they were sorry to see us go already - what a nice touch! We will always stay at the Riviera when vacationing in Palm Springs, and we heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a wonderful desert experience.

The only snafu in our stay was the air conditioner in our suite. Palm Springs was experiencing an unusual heat wave (99+ degrees) during our stay, and the resort was at full capacity, and the air conditioner could not effectively cool the room below 76 degrees. This was uncomfortable at times, but as we were rarely in the room it was not a bother.

This place has all of the amenities to be a great property.. But execution of basic hotel service is very lacking.

The great.. The Spa. Service was awesome, we did a couples massage.. Beautiful facility.. just top notch.. would go back in a heart beat.. Biggest plus of our stay at Riviera The bed was really comfy..

The Good.. decor and property.. nice fun upscale feel. Room had a bit of damage.. We had one very good pool server.. I think her name was Angelina? Blond gal.. obviously knew what she was doing.. She was the only staff member that seemed to have a good clue as to what was going on..

The Bad.. after checkin they forgot to deliver our bags.. after waiting in the room for 1 hour i called down and the front desk apologized and said they were on their way.. Then another 30 minutes.. no bag.. so i go down to the front desk and they are in a cart right in front of the desk.. with like 10 employees all standing on the drive.. I asked the FD what the problem was and that i had called down, and his response was.. we have no record of your call.. The guy was clueless. No one at this place really understands what is going on.. The reason this sucked was that we wanted to immediately go to the pool. Our lesson learned is self-park.. and tote your own luggage.. As they dont really have a good system to provide these services. The bad in the room.. dusty vents, dirty coffee cups (yuck) bathtub and sink did not drain, broken chair.. Just needed good maintenance.. day 2 of housekeeping didnt replace amenities or coffee or bring clean coffee cups. Weird. Over all 95% of the staff seemed to either be brand new, not have a clue, not care, or just indifferent.

I still would consider going back.. i would just be prepared for a do it yourself vacation.. enjoy the spa and enjoy the pool.. but not expect to be taken care of by the staff

1 1/2 hour

The bad.

Room Tip: The reason i wouldnt recommend is inconsistency

Staff could be more attentive and property could be cleaner. Asked maid for room location and was told she did not know. Condiments arrived more than half way thru lunch meal. Dirty trays in hall way. Two towels in bathroom for three adults and child in suite. Told too busy to take down in room breakfast order at 6:40 am. Maid kept knocking on door starting at 8 am to see if we had left (no do not disturb sign in room to hang on door). Told staff at check out time that stay was mediocre. Was asked for cell phone so that manager could call but have not received such call.

My two teenage sons and I spent three days here over spring break. We had a fabulous time! The arrival was fabulous. We waited in line about one minute, when someone came from the back room to help us. Once one of the other staff members was available to help us, she took over, and he returned to the back room. We had booked online through priceline and had been given a room with a king bed. Since there were three of us, the changed our room to a king bed with a sofa sleeper without a problem.

I had prepaid through priceline, and was quite shocked to hear that there was a $25 per night "resort fee". Apparently, the resort fee pays for self-parking, wi-fi, and a few other things. I have never booked through priceline and had to pay a mandatory additional fee at a hotel. I've always had an option of paying for parking, or parking offsite. I've never had to pay for parking if I wasn't going to use it. And to me, when a hotel advertises "free wi-fi", I've never had to pay a hidden fee for wi-fi. The $25 PER NIGHT RESORT FEE ended up costing us and EXTRA $56. Money I had not budgeted for this trip. It meant that we did not get to take the Aerial Tram, as we had planned.

Back to the hotel. We certainly enjoyed the hotel. It really is fabulous! I love the decor! Very fun. The room was clean and quite spacious. When we arrived in our room, of course one of the first things my sons checked out was the tv. They did notice that there was no remote for the tv. We called the front desk, and they said they would send one over. We waited about 45 minutes, then finally went out for the day. We called again when we got back (asked for extra towels as well.) We were heading out for dinner, but they said they would just leave them in the room. Upon return, still no towels or remote. So, we called a third time, and boom! The remote arrived, and shortly afterward, the two towels.

We LOVED the two pool areas! We were there over spring break so there were quite a few families present, even though we stayed during the week. The larger pool, with the Bikini Bar, was full of activity. The pool is plenty large to accommodate the many people enjoying the great weather. It's also nice to have the bar available so that people could order food or drink pool side if the so desired. We spent time at the smaller pool (still quite large) between buildings 4 and 5. It was almost like having a private pool. It was much less populated, and had plenty of wonderfully padded lounge chairs available.

My sons really enjoyed the pool table. The must have played pool for 4-5 hours over the three days we were there. One of the guys that worked there, each time he walked by then, would ask "Who's ahead?" I must say, throughout our stay, we noticed that the staff is very friendly.

It's a great hotel, and I highly recommend it. Just be aware of the added resort fee.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in buildings 1-3.

Thank you for including the positive aspects of your stay. Your feedback is appreciated. The resort fee is common to the comparable hotels in our area. Third party reservation sites do state that what you pay in advance may or may not include resort and/or parking fees however, the print does not always stand out. I apologize that it was a surprise to you. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope that you will choose us the next time you are in Palm Springs.

The Riviera is visually stunning and has a wonderful atmosphere. The pools, fire-pits, fruit trees, rolling green lawns and incredible modernist interiors and exteriors are just perfect as a backdrop for holidaying in the desert. The view from my window was of snow-capped mountains...superb!

In my three interactions with front desk staff they ranged from indifferent to downright rude. In contrast a problem of being overcharged was rectified with incredible speed by an extremely personable front of house supervisor.

Palm Springs is an awesome destination.
