The Coronet Motel is a good reminder not to judge a book by its cover. From the outside it looks like it probably did when it was first build decades ago: a 50's or 60's era motel, complete with small pool on the outside. It's totally retro, bringing to mind family road trips when I was young. On the inside, however, the furnishing and decor are totally modern and comfortable, as nice as anything you'd see in much more expensive accommodations. On top of that, the wifi is screaming fast, and completely free. The proprietor was very friendly and helpful, showing us a map with the lay of the land and helping us determine the right free shuttle to take onto campus. We were also greeted upon entry into our room by a hand-written welcome note, two complementary bottles of water and two Ghirardelli chocolate squares. Awesome! The location is ideal both for Stanford and many of the high-tech companies that fringe the campus. Right around the corner is California Street, with an abundance of fantastic small eateries in short walking distance. I would definitely stay here again.

We've stayed there twice so far, and had very good experiences. Clean, comfortable and spacious rooms. Great location for Stanford visits. Couple who owns/runs Coronet very friendly and helpful. If you want something outside the chain experience for a good price, this is the place to go.

A safe, comfortable, clean, friendly place to stay. Love being able to walk down California street for dinner or for a quick breakfast on my way into the office. This was my 3rd time staying at the Coronet and without question I will be returning!

We recently stayed at the Coronet while visiting our daughter in Palo Alto for six nights. The room includes another room with a couch and mini-kitchen. There's no stove but there is a microwave, frig/freezer, sink and a toaster and dishes if you ask for them. The people who run the place are always there and easy to approach. When our alarm clock wasn't working, they quickly brought us a new one. The rooms are not real quiet because it's on busy El Camino Real but the curtains are heavy duty at night and it didn't bother us. It was nice to come back to the motel for down time. Oh and the tv and Internet worked splendidly too. Also the owner showed us how to get around by bus if we wanted to. Also the air conditioner was great, quiet and strong.
The bed was great and the covers nice and the bathroom was roomy and clean. There's a pool area for relaxing either on chaise lounge chairs or sitting at tables with a umbrellas. It's not big but it's nice.
It's also just across the corner from a row of shops and restaurants, all independently run. Very nice place to walk around, with tables on the sidewalk. Then across the street is an Olive Garden restaurant. Nearby are pleasant residential streets and of course it's close to Stanford housing and campus. And the weather is so beautiful inPalo Alto that you'll find you can walk a lot more often and farther than in other places. We'll stay there again when we visit.

Room Tip: We had a suite but I don't know what the others are like. I know they all have the fridge and st...

I stayed at the Coronet for 9 nights recently, and would definitely recommend it for anyone visiting Palo Alto on a budget. The motel will not be winning any architectural design awards too soon, but hey, at a price level that is more than 50% less than the hotels in the area, the Coronet Motel provides a decent value proposition.
Pros:
* Clean rooms for a motel, and very friendly staff who really care about their guests.
* Convenient location (next to major road and within easy driving distance to most of Palo Alto, easy walking distance to a few coffee shops, restaurants and convenience store).
* Off-street parking, literally a few metres away from the rooms.
* Free high-speed wireless internet access.
* Cable television.
Cons:
* The noise level really takes some getting used to. Strangely enough it is not so much the traffic from El Camino Real street up front that is bothersome, but rather the noise levels early morning when service vehicles arrive to do deliveries and remove waste from behind the motel. The poor sound insulation of the rooms also makes it challenging as one hears every movement from guests in adjoining rooms and specifically upstairs (I could even hear my neighbour snoring through closed windows and doors!).
* The kitchenette is nice to have, however it misses basic cutlery and a kettle (we made coffee in the microwave though).
All in all, the Coronet Motel is definitely a great budget accommodation option in Palo Alto.

Room Tip: I suspect an upstairs room will be less exposed to the noise levels.

First of all its exceptionally clean. The staff are super helpful and friendly. The room is comfortable and appointed with what you need. I had an event at Stanford and this is a very close and handy place to be. I cant find any fault with it what so ever - Highly recommended and I would stay again, no question about it. Unlike some many of the large hotel chains they have a personal touch - hand written notes and so forth. Its just like staying with family. Its an outstanding value and very clean indeed. No question about it, if you are in the area and have options stay here!

We have stayed here on two occasions as my husband has chemo at Stanford Hospital early on Friday mornings. It is no more than a 10 minute drive - or you can take the handy shuttle. The rooms, while not luxurious, are comfortable and convenient. The staff is as helpful as they can be and there are several restaurant options within a 5 minute walk. Why would you want to spend SO much more money to stay anywhere else?
