“Tiny but Tidy”
Reviewed 22 August 2012

I've been coming to the Keen for over a year. I really like the fact that there is no room service or fitness center because it forces me to get out and enjoy the nice weather and food in Palo Alto. The rooms are always very clean and have windows you can open to get fresh air. Service is great! They are always very personable and helpful.

Perhaps not for people not used to small boutique hotels but this is normal for me. I like the simple yet tasteful furnishings - very modern stylistic decor. Central location within Palo Alto and convenient for my business meetings in the Bay Area. Stone throw from the nice restaurants at Palo Alto with the Stanford Shopping Center a few minutes walk away.

Yes, the rooms are a little on the small size but you are in the heart of Palo Alto. If you're not out and about shopping, taking in the great food and wine around the corner from you and you instead prefer spending endless amounts of time in your hotel, then yes -- it's on the small side.

Otherwise, it's perfect for a quick few days in PA, especially if you are here on business. It's modern, well decorated and well/fairly priced. Bed was so comfy, pillows were great! The staff was amazing, helpful, chatty/friendly (in a good way), the breakfast was great, showers hot and the room I was in had a cool white-board like wall that you can actually write on (perfect for planning your day, keeping little ones occupied maybe?).

The only thing was that you could hear people coming/going in the hall way or slightly above you (walls a little thin) but I've stayed in more expensive hotels, in major cities and they were way worse. I didn't mind it at all.

As for the comments about the parking -- yes you have to move your car around a little bit in order to avoid a ticket, but that's not the hotel's fault -- it's the city of Palo Alto. Given that the downtown core is usually pretty busy, you can usually manage to find free spots and lots and the windows are usually pretty reasonable (ie: free after 5pm until 10 am). There are also underground parking garages around the corner that let you stay overnight/all day for free. You just have to ask around and read parking signs. Again, not the hotel's fault.

Rooms at The Keen are tiny, very reminiscent of Manhattan hotels, with enough room for a bed and a small desk & chair next to the bed. The desk surface is big enough for a laptop computer and that's about it. There are no dressers and no closet. There are, however, two drawers that pull out from under the bed. The bathrooms are also quite small, with no tubs. Sometimes, this is the only option among the often-crowded Palo Alto hotels, and it is fine for me, but my colleagues and I like to call it a W-style dorm room. It's good if you are alone, not too big a person and aren't staying for more than a couple of days. Otherwise, your suitcase would probably be too big to fit into the room. You can park on the street for free, which is usually pretty open later in the evening, and you are walking distance from all of downtown Palo Alto, which is wonderful. Service is friendly. Please note that since there are no closets, there is no place to hang things and you'll have to iron each outfit you wear each day. Make sure to grab an iron and ironing board from the front desk (they'll deliver it to you) and keep it in your room. They also offer free breakfast items and other snacks throughout the day. From what I've noticed, on the first floor, rooms on the left side of the hall are smaller than those on the right, though they're all quite small. Finally, the walls are pretty thin. I was sitting in bed working on my laptop and I could hear the phone conversation of the person in the next room, who was probably just on the other side of the wall.

Room Tip: Rooms on the right side of the hall on the first floor are slightly larger, though they're all q...

The rooms across the hall are not only larger, but they also all have closets with luggage racks and iron and ironing boards in them. The good news is they are only $15 more per night so for longer stays or if travelling with a large number of bags these are the better choice. The bad news is they almost always sell out before the standard rooms!

The hotel is located in the heart of downtown Palo Alto, a nice location, with lots of places to eat. You can manage without a car, and you are better off without one as the hotel doesn't offer any parking, though it's easy to find a parking a block or two away. Wifi doesn't work, it's terribly slow when it does, but the connection doesn't last more than a few minutes. Complained at the desk, but they didn't know what to do about it. Breakfast is horrible, a bunch of pastries, sugar bombs, and that's about it. The good news is its very easy to get a decent breakfast in a near by cafe. The room was very small, the bed barely fit. I guess it's ok if you stay overnight, but this hotel is no place for more extended stays, don't think about a week in this place. I'm definitely not returning.

We have had a number of comments regarding our internet service and are in the process of replacing all of our access points as well as adding additional ones. While our breakfast selection does offer a variety of pastries we also offer yogurt, granola and fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs and cereals. It is billed as a continental breakfast and as an inclusive offering I feel it is a very good value. I know on longer stays seeing the same thing every day might start to seem unappealing. Luckily there are some very nice cafes that offer full breakfast right nearby for a change of pace.

Very very small room. Wouldn't want to share it unless the other person was quite small and we liked bumping into each other frequently. Also no bathroom door - just a curtain to pull across, which I think would be awkward with another person.

- no closet - just a hook on the wall with two hangers
- no dresser - two drawers are built in to the base of the platform for the bed. There is a very small (24" x 18") desk/bedside table.
- Street or lot parking is free from 5 pm until 10 am. After that you have to buy a pass for $18/day.
- Could hear the person upstairs walking around (how did they walk around so much in such a small space?)

Things I liked:
- comfy queen sized bed, and nice towels and bathrobe
- friendly staff
- very good location
- nice tiled shower, but they need to provide a non-slip mat
- clean modern room
- free wi-fi, though the connection is a bit slow
- a desk chair that is comfortable and at the right height for using laptop at the desk
- good climate control with an easy to figure-out control panel (that I could reach, along with 3 different light switches, without getting out of bed)
- Good lighting - too often in hotels I turn on every lamp in the room and still feel like it's too dark to find things in my suitcase
- You can open the window for fresh air - but the view is a wall.

This was a business trip, and I wouldn't really say this is a great hotel for business travelers because it doesn't have all the amenities that business travelers generally expect (e.g. an iron for touch-ups to clothes)

And finally, I have to admit that I did write on the "whiteboard" wall with the provided dry erase markers - though most of my jottings were along the lines of "smallest hotel room ever" and "am I in Japan?"

Great boutique hotel, convenient to everything in town and around Stanford. Super shower, products and comfy bed. Small room but it works! Very generous complimentary food offerings from espresso all the time to cookies after 8 pm and a lovely continental breakfast in the morning. Very friendly hotel staff greeted us as we came and went! Looking forward already to planning a return!

Room Tip: Third floor was great.
