“A great place during a trying time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2008

My son was scheduled for outpatient surgery at Stanford Medical Center, so I contacted the Sheraton in Palo Alto for room availability. They did not have one that would accommodate our needs, but found a room at their sister hotel, the Westin, next door. We checked in Sunday night, my son had his surgery on Monday, and we stayed until Wednesday for his post op dressing change. Without a doubt this was a most pleasant experience during a most trying time. Every staff member we came in contact with was nice and eager to assist our needs. I called them after the surgery to request a piece of equipment be installed in the room. This was taken care of by the time we got back to the hotel. We utilized room service for our meals, as my son wasn't able to get around very well. While it was expensive, it was well worth it for us, and it was served promptly (always less than 30 minutes). I wasn't able to get out much to look around, but the facility was extremely clean and again the staff was terrific! I would not hesitate to stay there again, hopefully for a pleasure trip next time!!

After having red the comments on Tripadvisor, I decided to stay here for one night before going to SF airport. The choice was absolutely right, the hotel was perfect and it took me 30 minutes to drive to the airport. Big room with large bathroom, all newly decorated and very tasteful. Stuff friendly and quick. The hotel has also a good location to feel some student live in the city. It is located at a big route, so you might want to make sure you get a room more in the back if you want it quite. It is located next to a parking, so probably you would not enjoy the location for a weeks holiday, but as a just stop over it is perfect.

Stayed here as part of a conference so didn't have much ability to select where i would be. Overall i was pleased - very pleasant staff (accomodating me so that i could stay until my red eye back to the east coast), perfectly outfitted for business with a big desk, lots of plugs for all your stuff.

My only complaint is that the little mini-sized shampoos etc. were in pretty skimpy supply and not restocked every day. Since i really enjoy taking these with me and adding to my overflowing collection at home that are all color-coded and arranged according to size and purpose it was disappointing.

Located basically at the corner of University Avenue, the "main street" of Palo Alto, and El Camino Real, the main surface road through the valley, this hotel serves its purpose well. The rooms are spacious, with sizeable bathrooms boasting separate tub and shower and an ample sized vanity. The room also sports a 32 inch flat screen, though the reception in our room left something to be desired.

The pool area, while small, is nicely landscaped, with cushioned sun loungers. The gym has ample cario equipment--each piece sports its own individual TV--but lacks a sufficient number of strength training machines.

Service was good, with special kudos to the parking attendants.

It is a short walk to downtown Palo Alto, where all the restaurants and shops are located.

All in all, this is a nice, elegant property in an area--Silicon Valley--generally lacking in such properties.

My husband and I took our daughter to Stanford, and got a great rate a the Westin Palo Alto at the Starwood Preferred website. Our room (119) was beautiful, with a large marble bath and a comfortable, large room with a large flat screen TV and king-size bed. It was at ground level and opened onto a quiet inner courtyard where my husband sat all day working on his laptop in the sun. The property has a small but pretty pool with hot tub in another courtyard, and a small quiet bar. We did not eat at the restaurant. Even though the hotel is on a busy street, inside it is very calm, lovely and quiet. Everyone who worked at this property was exceptionally nice and helpful (we stay at a lot of Westins, but this one had friendlier staff than usual--must be California ). We will definitely stay here every time we come to visit our daughter!

  • Liked — Beautiful, serene design. Friendly staff.
  • Disliked — nothing, it was perfect.

I had a room booked via Expedia for a stay here August 2008. My reservation specified a King. When I called the night before to confirm the reservation and make a request, I was told by the manager Paul that no kings were available. The call was then transferred to another manager Kaffe (sp?) who offered to honor the reservation by upgrading me to a larger room for $100. I obviously declined and chose another hotel in town. You might want to confirm any reservations made online to avoid a similar fate.

The room was quite large as was the bathroom. The bed was clean and crisp and comfortable. The bathroom spotless. The rugs and upholstered furniture in the rooms could use some steam cleaning, but overall the hotel is clean and inviting. Location is excellent. Downtown Palo Alto is right around the corner and has excellent restaurants from pizza to fine dining. The front desk staff is friendly and very accommodating. Stanford University is right across the street and worth an evening stroll across the campus. It's a great location and only a 20 minute drive from downtown San Francisco.
