“Amazing Hotel”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

My mother and I recently spent 2 weeks driving the California coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles and back. When preparing for this trip I spent many hours on this site reviewing accommodations knowing that tripadvisor never steers me wrong. I can honestly say that the reviewers have once again come through for me - every single hotel/motel/inn I booked was amazing.

The Zen Hotel was our last stop of the trip. We spent 2 days here and enjoyed every minute of it. A couple of points:

Booking: I booked online; it was quick and easy.

Check-in/Check out: Quick and easy; staff was professional, friendly and more than willing to answer any questions that we had re: dining options or traffic on the 101 the morning of our departure.

Lobby: Clean; welcoming. Free newspapers each morning as well as a great assortment or coffees and teas available.

Breakfast: Much more than a standard continental. There were hot foods available (eggs, bacon, hash browns, oatmeal) as well as fruit, cereal, and breads. Breakfast staff was also attentive making sure food was well stocked and tables were cleaned quickly.

Rooms: We were very impressed by the rooms. Nicely decorated; beds were the most comfortable ones we had on the trip; linens were comfy. Nice flat screen TV with lots of channels. Mini-fridge in the room as well as complimentary water. Bath and Body Works shampoo/conditioner/body lotion and soap.

Parking: We had a ground floor room and were able to park right in front; parking was free.

Miscellaneous: There is a nice patio area where you can sit and read the paper (or just relax).

Overall, would definitely recommend to others and would stay here again.

For the second year, this hotel was our home-away-from-home over the Christmas holiday. If you have to stay in a hotel, this is the place. The four of us (two adult children) had the two-bedroom suite, with a nice living area and tiny, but complete, kitchen. (Somehow, the kids even baked cookies there!) Very clean, simple furniture, clean lines and open space. Sink outside the shower area which is good for a group. Smaller rooms look spacious with the same oriental-style. Breakfast includes eggs and bacon/sausage as well as the usual cereal, hard boiled eggs, bagels, etc.

Dear guest,

Thank you for returning to The Zen Hotel. We are so glad to be your "home away from home" for the second year in a row. I do recall our staff assisting you with finding a baking pan for the cookies. It is good to know the baking project was a success!

We have your new reservation for this year's Christmas confirmed and look forward to welcome you to The Zen Hotel yet again on your next holiday trip.

All the best in the new year!

A great value hotel in Palo Alto!! The outside looks like a 1950s motel, but it looks like they did lots of upgrades and renovations. The rooms were very clean and comfortable with small touches that will confirm you made the right decision staying there. Breakfast was better than those hotels who have the "continental" breakfast. Good eggs, sausage, potatoes and fruit. Very good muffins and coffee from Peets and Starbucks. If you want a great value, stay away from the Best Westerns and Comfort Inns and stay here!!

I stayed at this hotel durning a hospital visit and it was a great experience. I am very glad I picked the zen hotel to stay at. The best part of the zen experience at this hotel is how great the hotel is.... Here are some of the good things about it: clean room, friendly/professional staff (one of the best night mangers, Lily, I have ever met!) , free delicious breakfast (with a good amount of options), prime location, free movie channels, free cookies all night, etc. Stay here, you won't regret it.

From the outside this place looks like a 1950s motel that has been done up. But once inside it is obvious that the people behind the Zen have a good appreciation of what's important.

Fast wireless (around 20mb/s), great beds, reminiscent of the Westin's 'Heavenly' mattress, and a shower with lots of pressure.

There were other nice touches as well, such as the nicely landscaped garden sitting area out the back door of the unit and a good array of coffee, complimentary chocolates and quality linen.

Best accommodation of our trip so far!

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have access to 'Zen Garden'

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing such a fantastic review with the Tripadvisor community. I am very glad to learn that our team's efforts to cater to the modern traveler did not go unnoticed. We firmly believe that truly high speed WiFi is a hotel amenity that is now comparable to offering AM/FM radio. It is a must, and we are proud to offer it at no additional cost to all our guests.

Thank you also for your comments about the comfort of our mattresses and the little things we do to personalize your stay. We are a small hotel and we care about every single one of our guests. Rest assured that our team is is continuously inspired by the concept of true hospitality and feedback such as yours is what keeps us going.

All the best and we look forward to a new opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel soon.

Normally I would never stay at hotel like this or even remotely like it. While this is a "no frills" hotel and it is Motel style, it is actually a fantastic place to stay. The rooms are very nicely done with nice, modern decor and well sized. Great linens and toiletries with super comfortable beds, great linens and you even get bathrobes. I was nervous about staying in a motel style, but felt very safe and heard no street noise whatsoever. The staff was very friendly and they also offer a great breakfast and free WiFi.

The hotel fitness room is in deperate need of an update, and there are no ameneties; however for the rate you pay, this is a great hotel to stay at if you are here on business for just a few nights. There is also a Walgreens across the street and lots of places to eat if you need food. I manage an office in Mountain View just a few miles away and this will be my new "go to" hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the courtyard

We really enjoyed our stay at this Palo Alto hotel near Stanford. Nothing is over the top, but everything is done simply and to a high standard. The rooms are clean and functional. The breakfast is simply but satisfying. The hotel is conveniently located to a few nice restaurants within walking distance and a Walgreens in case you've forgotten something.
