“Less variety, smaller portions, bad service”

This used to be my favorite place, but recently they revamped their menu. They got rid of my favorite Parisienne sandwich (brie with apple butter) as well as my favorite soup (wild mushroom), as well as a few other varieties. They used to be happy to switch sandwiches for the combos, but now they're really strict, you have to get the combo or buy what you want separately. The combo used to come with potato chips, now it doesn't. They used to add bacon for free if you wanted it, now you have to pay $1 for a square inch of bacon. The bread is thinner and smaller. The service at the Stanford location has been decent, but we recently visited the Redwood City location, and they got every single thing about our order wrong. They've lost a loyal customer.

Light on the cheese - free bacon and tomato which were both a whisper on the sandwich. Small cup of soup. Won't go again.

New favorite place for lunch. It takes everything good about the American Grill in San Francisco, and makes it cheaper, faster, more accessible... and possibly tastier.

We indulged in ultimate gluttony and tried three of their sandwiches and two of their soups. The colby jack on whole wheat, which comes with black bean soup as part of the Outlaw, was by far my absolute favorite... but we're talking my favorite among an entire menu of sandwiches that make *me* melt, so I really feel like you can't go wrong. The jalapeno pepper jack is quite spicy, and the fontina/provolone on garlic bread also has a little kick to it, so just be forewarned. They've paired their combos absolutely perfectly, so the spicy sandwich comes with a more mild, sweeter soup, and savory flavors are complemented in the best ways.

Tomato and bacon are free to add, the beverages are natural cane soda (or wine or beer!), and the sandwiches come with some chips and a pickle.

I'll stop the world and melt here anytime.

The Melt is a venture funded chain restaurant (Sequoia Capital). This is the outpost closest to Sequoia, and on the outside of the mall where the VCs can check out the chain without actually mingling. It's a concept, like Chipotle, which is quick and has good taste and wouldn't be a bad choice on a rainy afternoon when you have to stop at the Apple Store (and the Microsoft Store to check out the new offerings). However, it's just a chain, the grilled cheese is just grilled cheese, it's not worth a stop or a trip - unless you are a fan of the VC community and want to see how even savvy investors like Sequoia can be fooled into making a small fortune in the restaurant business.

Excellent comfort food. Great service. Quick if you need to grab a bite to go. Highly recommend trying the brie and honey melt! Love the soda machine too...
