“Wonderful food!!!”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

Rangoon Ruby is nice Burmese restaurant tucked away in side alley of University avenue in Palo Alto. Service is good and food is even better. I had tea leaf salad which was delicious and had Chicken Kewat which we had ordered spicy, but turned out to be too spicy for our taste and waiter happily exchanged for less spicy dish. Food is delicious and very flavorful. Will definitely visit again when I visit Palo Alto again.

“Best Burmese in the south bay”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

Burmese food is an intriguing combination of Indian. Chinese, Thai and some Vietnamese flavors - but with some very unique and exciting variations to familiar flavors and ingredients. It's yummy and a go to Asian cuisine.

We are fans of Burma Superstar in SF, were thrilled to finally get a local option where we could make reservations. Tea leaf salad without the drive and the wait!!

This place does a very good job with the appetizers like Burmese standards like tea leaf salad and rainbow salad. But -- it is not as good as BS. Friendly service, they serve you quickly to keep up with the crowds.

The food is a little more oily, spicy and salty. I love Burmese because it incorporates a lot of flavor without being too heavy. Rangoon Ruby can be a little heavy. Superstar has incredible drinks - the fresh lemonade with mint is to die for. The drinks here are very average.

I'd say it's about 60% as good as superstar. 60% of amazing is still very good - but it's not the knock your socks of amazing food of Superstar. The best option locally, so I'm glad we have it coz I got hungry writing the review.

If you have never eaten Burmese: tea leaf salad, rainbow salad (both mixed right at the table!), samosa soup, samosa, ruby shrimp, lemongrass chicken, kebat and coconut rice are great choices. I have not tried their coconut noodle soup, but it sounds very interesting ... on my list of things to try! I'll be back.

“Surprisingly below average”
Reviewed 8 February 2014 via mobile

This place disappointed in several ways. I ordered a dirty martini and the olive juice had expired.. it was rancid.. horrible. Even the waiyer said is smelled disgusting. Second try.. same thing.. why wouldn't someone taste it with the little straw trick? Ok.. on to food.. it was ok but do not get the shrimp curry. The shrimp were undercooked and its not in a curry at all!! Just some watery spices.. our table tried it once then didn't touch it again. The other food was average.

“Fantastic Eatery!”
Reviewed 19 January 2014

Absolutely fantastic food and drink! In particular ask for the 1942 Mai Tai. It is not yet on the menu but will be added in the next version of it. It is FANTASTIC! Rainbow Salad, Pumpkin Tofu Stew, and Coconut Rice were also divine! Happy hour is 5-6 and has 1/2 off appetizers and many drinks are heavily discounted. It gets very busy, so reservations are highly recommended! Highly, highly recommend this eatery!

“OK, but not outstanding”
Reviewed 14 January 2014

Perhaps I am hard to please, or perhaps I visit so many restaurants that I am becoming a bit too discerning. This is to say that there was nothing wrong with the dinner we had at Rangoon Ruby. But, there was nothing exceptional either about the food, that is, nothing that I will remember for more than a couple of days. Service was good and courteous, the restaurant is perfectly located downtown, it's a nice setting with a very acceptable noise level, and food was OK. But, indeed, just OK.
