Cowper Inn
Ranked #1 of 4 Palo Alto B&B and Inns
Reviewed 19 May 2008

I live in Palo Alto and had often admired the very lovely Cowper Inn from the outside. I suggested that my parents and I stay there when they came to visit because my dad loves B&B's and it looked wonderful. My step-mother arrived on a Friday afternoon after a long drive and was eager to check-in and take a shower, as it was over 100 degrees. She was greeted by a locked door and a note that someone would return by 6:30! She sat on the deck of the inn in stifling heat for over two hours and was told by the woman who returned that she had been out shopping. She then placed my parents in a small, back room with no air-conditioning when there were many others available. When we asked, she reluctantly moved us to an even smaller room with air conditioning (that barely worked) in the main house. Our disappointment wasn't as much to do with the facilities (quite pretty and comfortable apart from the heat) as with what we experienced as an utter lack of hospitality. We did not feel like welcome guests but customers who were barely tolerated.

I love this b&b, it's got a great location two blocks away from the downtown area, with its shops and restaurants. My room was huge, though there is a slight musty smell. The breakfasts are huge and excellent in quality, with this addictive organic yogurt, eggs, bread, coffees, teas, orange juice. It was absolutely delicious. The proprietor, Jorgy, was really helpful and friendly. They let me stash a bottle of wine in their fridge. I decided to return to Palo Alto in May and booked a room at the Cowper Inn. I don't intend to stay anywhere else while in Palo Alto.

Very nice bed and breakfast, centrally located in Palo Alto. The proprietors go out of their ways to accommodate guests and are very friendly. Many rooms are very spacious, including several suites with a second, smaller bedroom or a sitting room, for which the rates are to the best of my knowledge no greater than that of a standard single room. In the annex there is a slightly musty smell but it is very tolerable. I recommend the Cowper to travelers to Palo Alto.
