From the road, this place looks like a hotel. And it's connection with the on-premesis Trader Vic's restaurant may seem questionable. Odd too that the front desk staff seemed exclusively male. But this is a great, great old-school place with giant, comfortable rooms and all the bells and whistles. Probably the best hotel stay I've had this year.

They are also pet-friendly, and their pet fee is not particularly exorbitant. (Like many places now, they charge a single pet fee regardless of how long you're staying, so be sure to check it if you're only staying one night.)

Also, many of the rooms have gorgeous little sitting areas facing one of their koi-filled ponds (if you don't like the sound of a running brook, avoid these rooms.) But if you want one, I believe they are most of the rooms starting with #500 and low odd # rooms starting with #600 (for instance #605.) Obviously, you can also ask.

A really unusual and brilliant place to stay in an area that now has its share of cookie-cutter luxury, but nothing, nothing like this. I cannot say enough good about it!

Room Tip: Most of the rooms in the #500 range and odd # rooms starting with #600 (at least low-numbered) ones...

We booked a suite which was very spacious as was the bed which was extremely comfortable, one of those beds that you struggle to get out of in the morning. The pool is heated and eating a delicious breakfast by the pool is a tranquil experience. You must visit Trader Vic's which is on-site and have dinner and a few cocktails. You may bump into the owner, Julie who is incredibly welcoming. She sent us a bottle of wine when you learnt it was my birthday. I would definitely return to Dinah's and Trader Vic's again.

Room Tip: Go for a suite

Dinah's Garden Hotel was a very pleasant surprise. You should definitely select one of the higher-priced rooms as they have been beautifully renovated and are worth the extra cost. The poolside grill is charming, with very nice waiters - best if you stick to simple egg, pancake or sandwich options. We stayed three nights in April for a wedding and will definitely be back!

I stayed three nights in April and the room was great! Very large, with bar sink, small refrig, table and one easy chair. TV was analog and therefore no HD. The only drawback is the flow restrictor on the bathroom sink was really saving water, it came out in a very small spray, but this was a minor problem. My room was at the back and had nice trees in view plus was completely away from the El Camino traffic. Heating and A/C is central and there is no fan noise.

Room Tip: Ask for a back room, parking is close, very quiet.

Friendly welcome to what is in effect a large motel situated out of Palo Alto town centre on the main highway. We had a large quiet (away from highway) clean room with balcony overlooking garden and pool. Morning after arrival went to pool side 'cafe' and asked if it was where continental breakfast was served - told yes. Sat at table and showed waitress booking info and checked that she understood that price included continental breakfast - she answered yes. Served an indifferent continental breakfast ( weakest coffee ever and soggy toast) then we were presented with a bill ! Apparently the inclusive 'continental' breakfast is a cup of coffee and a muffin or doughnut in the reception area. No apology or expression of regret for misunderstanding from cafe or hotel staff (cafe apparently run as separate facility - no evidence that 'hotel' offered any catering of its own). Whilst not infrequent travellers in the States we thought hotel and/or booking site should have been a bit more 'honest' about the morning 'complimentary' coffee and doughnut rather than describing it as a continental breakfast !

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking pool.

Absolutely love this place. It's old and a step back in time, but casually elegant. I always wish I had more time to enjoy sitting out on the back deck, in the adirondack chairs, reading my book and enjoying the lush vegetation and winding koi pond. Beds are very comfortable and love being treated with fresh apples for a homey touch after a long drive.

Dinah's Garden Hotel is a great spot in Palo Alto. Mid-price in an area that has either high end or low end accomodations. Could not ask for more. You might feel that you have landed in your grandparents Florida condo circa 1975, but don't let that put you off. The rooms are well appointed, with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Service is great and the on premises dining for breakfast or for dinner at Trader Vic's are more than adequate. In fact if you are travelling on business (alone) you can have dinner in the bar as part of the nearly all-night happy hour and you won't be disappointed. As with most of the accomodations in the Palo Alto area, book early to insure availability.
