Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel
Ranked #15 of 27 Hotels in Palo Alto
Reviewed 31 January 2010

The location is great. You're within walking distance of downtown Palo Alto, the campus and arguably the Stanford Shopping Mall. The people who work there are also nice and good at their jobs.

The rest, however, is the worst I've experienced at any Starwood hotel (including less expensive brands) anywhere in the world:
- room was out-dated and old. It didn't include little things like mini-bar, safe or even a pen in the desk drawer.
- bathroom was nasty. It was tiny with a sliding door that was tough to close and made loud squeaking noises that made overcoming jet lag tougher than it normally was.
- internet access was flaky. They charged us $10/day for service that worked sporadically and when we called the # for support the service told us they no longer supported the hotel. The guy at the front desk did his best but he wasn't a tech support guy.
- the club room wasn't worth using. I'm not a picky coffee guy but the stuff that came out of the machine was inedible.
- our room keys (cards) kept failing. we had to take them back to the desk 3x because they stopped working. You also use them to get in/out of the parking lot so that was especially inconvenient.
- the hotel was run down and messy. there was a box of trash (pieces of wood, used coffee cups, etc.) in the stairwell we took from the parking lot to our room. we stayed for 5 days. it was there when we arrived and there when we left.
- expensive amenities. $10/day for parking and they also charged us $10 for a 1 page fax to Hong Kong. I would understand charging so much in 1989 when a minute overseas was $4 but not in 2010.

All of that said, if you're a Starwood points chump and you need to stay in Palo Alto, this is still your best bet. From what I could tell, the Westin next door didn't look any better and was more expensive. And as I said before, the location is great.

Pros: Good location in downtown Palo Alto, very close to main shopping/restaurant area. Many restaurants, stores, etc. within an easy 5-10 minute walk. Convenient to CalTrain station (one-minute walk) for travel into San Francisco and to SFO airport (must connect with BART train). My room was very nice, staff was accomodating, good breakfast buffet (although a bit pricey at $20), outdoor eating area in nice weather overlooking pool. Hertz rental car location right next door at Westin hotel. Convenient to Stanford.

Cons: CalTrain line runs behind hotel so rooms facing the back may experience train noise. Parking runs $10/night at hotel. A 10-minute drive or so to the area tech companies.

My daughter was married this past weekend and her reception was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Palo Alto. The Sheraton and Westin hotels were just so wonderful to us and treated us as honored guests. We had lots of out of town guest staying in both hotels and everyone was accomodated so nicely. It was the weekend of the Stanford/Cal game so there were lots of people around but we never were inconvenienced at all. The reception room was beautiful and Karen Bowne who was the catering director for the Sheraton did a fabulous job with everything. All the planning was so easy and everything that was promised was delivered--and then some! It was a perfect day. The food was excellent and the cake was the best ever. I would highly recommend this beautiful setting for anyone looking for a wedding day where you can just enjoy yourself with all your friends and family.

For the money you pay...it was hardly worth it. 10 bucks to park every day?? Expensive area but you wouldn't know it by the inside of the hotel. People that live in the area are freaking rich if they don't mind paying this much for a room!!

I had to stay in the area on business and made the mistake of staying at the Sheraton. This hotel is very run down. The bathroom is tiny, dirty and in need of repair. It looks like a cheap Holiday Inn room that they threw a nice bed in. The bed was comfortable but the room itself was terrible. The hotel is very hold and the walls are thin. I could hear the conversations of the people staying around me. Also, my room was in the back and faced the train tracks and station. As the train came into the station, it would blow the horn. And, the train ran all night. This was one of the worst nights I have spent in any hotel (even one at 1/3 the price). The Westin is right next door and it much nicer. Do yourself a favor and avoid this hotel!

I've used this hotel several times a year for many years, due to a company rate. It has easily the best location in the area, right at the end of University avenue and ideally placed for restaurants, bookstores & shopping. The beds are very comfortable, and the linen always crisp and clean.

Over the years, though, it is clear that they aren't spending the money they need to on maintenance. Rooms are going from 'tired' to frankly shabby. What was once a clean fresh cream look is now drab beige, and my room clearly wasn't vacuumed the whole week (a dead leaf on the floor by the window never moved). It used to be a Holiday Inn, and when Sheraton took over they brought it back up to standard. Maybe a new takeover is needed?

The breakfast buffet is very good, although at $20+ including tip/taxes it is as overpriced as any hotel in the area, and the pool/courtyard area is a pleasant place to sit with a beer or cocktail. The bar is a somewhat soulless sports bar, good as a meeting place but not for a cosy tête-a-tête. I gave up on the boring restaurant years ago, maybe it's improved but with the whole of Palo Alto on your doorstep, why eat in the hotel?

Overall I'd have no problem staying there again, but you can do better. The Stanford Park Hotel is 10minutes walk, slightly less well-placed right on El Camino, but a much more upmarket hotel. For atmosphere I'd go there instead, downsides are slightly less comfortable beds and a waiter/ress service breakfast that is slow and expensive.
