My wife and I spent nearly five months at the River Lodge Resort last winter, and we're looking for a way to do so again. We found the environment along the lower Colorado River enchanting. Especially during the winter, when it's possible to scramble into the desert in any direction and barely work up a sweat. The combination of habitats - cottonwood galleries, cactus patches, palm groves - is just astounding. And then there are the wild burros.
The resort is most definitely right in the middle of it all, and has a relatively gentle impact on the overall character of the area. I personally found the staff in the office to be more than helpful and very friendly. "Rules" are minimal, which is a good thing if you value freedom above heavy-handed orderliness. The resort also contains a very high proportion of repeat campers, which says something in itself. I saw groups of friends that had met up at River Lodge for years. The crowd is on the senior side, but very active, especially regarding golf. Importantly, I never encountered rowdy drunkos, but then maybe I have a more liberal definition of rowdy than many.
The rest-rooms and showers definitely are a liability. I can easily understand some people would be unlikely to take regular showers in some of the faciities provided. TV access is also problematic in some areas. After holiday weekends, the dumpsters are more than full. All of these things could stand improvement.
In general I loved the place because of the environment, the relaxed atmosphere, and the value received per dollar spent.
