“Redone and Still Great”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

We came back for our anniversary and were happy to see the new changes. We had loved the charm in the past and even with the new update this is still a wonderful place to stay. The changes are modern and warm at the same time. The inn is beautiful and the staff were terrific and made this very special for us. They surprised us with chocolate dipped strawberries after dinner on our anniversary. Made to order breakfasts, cookies at night, Happy hour in the late afternoon with wine from their winery. The staff and chef help make this a special place to go back to. The food is excellent and we can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: We have stayed in different rooms over the years and liked them all. The second floor rooms with a...

The view from the bedroom was magnificent as was the bedroom. We had a balcony where we could see where they were about to plant more vines from the room. This Inn is attached to a winery which is just as spectacular, with roses and flowering shrubs everywhere. Apparently the whole Inn has been redone with wonderful results. They don't have an elevator so pack lightly when you go. There is a free bottle of wine in every room, Summerwood, of course. The breakfast, I can't say enough about! You indicate which breakfast you want from a list, and say what time you want it. Give it to the front desk, and when you go down in the morning, it's there for you. The chef makes it right in front of you and she's a fine chef. You can take your breakfast outside on the patio if you wish.

My husband and I stayed here for four nights for our honeymoon. We had such a great time -- my only hesitation in writing a glowing review is that we won't be able to get a room the next time we visit Paso!

The inn itself has recently been redone, in a crisp yet supremely comfortable style. We wanted to avoid the flowery-quaint decor of some inns, anything feeling too finicky, and anything at all worn out. Summerwood fit the bill perfectly.

First -- I cannot say enough great things about the hotel staff. From the time we made our booking, they made us feel welcome and cared-for without being fawned over. They were all so friendly, courteous, thoughtful, and appropriately attentive.

Our room (No. 4) was sizable, with a gas fireplace, big comfy bed with good bedding, calming neutral decor, very private balcony with table and chairs, desk, and small seating area. The bathroom was large, with a wonderful shower, OK bathtub (nothing special, but separate from the shower, which is nice), and good-smelling Summerwood branded products.

The inn is definitely a place for people who love eating and drinking good wine. If one day you were feeling too lazy or tired to hunt down food in the outside world (after an ambitious day of tasting?), you could eat your fill right there.

First -- the breakfasts are large and surprisingly good (and I am very particular about breakfast)! We were not disappointed once, with seasonally inspired dishes like a fresh pea and asparagus frittata; blueberry lemon french toast; poached eggs with hollandaise over avocado toast; and a hearty oatmeal with fruit and nuts. Plates are all served with slow-roasted potatoes and tender baby kale salad, making them as healthy as they are flavorful. Daily servings of some of the best granola I've ever had, along with yogurt and berries, further ensured that you would not be hungry again until well into your day. And my very-coffee-snob husband even gave a thumbs up to their daily brew.

Each evening, after a long day of wine tasting, we arrived home to find a fantastic spread of "snacks," laid out in the kitchen (something like 5 - 7 pm). This could have easily served as a nice meal had we decided to stay in one evening. Wonderful grain and vegetable salads, cheese with crackers and homemade kumquat marmalade, and flatbread with cilantro pesto and bright yellow sungold tomatoes, were among the more memorable items. All of this is served, of course, alongside bottomless glasses of Summerwood's signatures wines.

And as if that weren't enough - each evening starting at 8:00, the staff put out coffee and homemade desserts, things like mini chocolate bundt cakes with berry coulis or bacon-banana cookies. So good!

There are lots of semi-private places to sit around the grounds and inside main building, and each evening we got our cheese and wine then sat chatting through the dusk at a table in the large back lawn facing the vineyard (some of which was being replanted - interesting for wine novices to see). For some reason, we were the only guests to choose this location, so it felt very private.

The hotel's location within the region is unbeatable. It's located on the Summerwood vineyard, across the street from the winery, amidst fields of vineyards. Some of the best small and up-and-coming wineries on the west side of Paso are within a five-or-ten-minute drive, and Paso itself is an easy fifteen minute car ride. Many great wineries, both large and small, are within a twenty-minute drive (on some very fun driving roads), and one could easily spend a few days exploring the area using Summerwood as a base. No matter how much you pack into each day, once you're back at the inn it really feels like the countryside...slow, quiet, and welcoming.

It's hard to find small places that have the right balance of setting, service, ambiance, and amenities, and I am happy to say that Summerwood really nails it. We'll definitely be back!

Oh -- and the wine is really good, too! We hit their tasting room on our way out of town and although we had already tried a couple of their larger production wines in the evenings, were pleasantly surprised by many of their other offerings and took home half a case!

Room Tip: Top Floor Interior Rooms - if you don't want to have to go outside to access your room.

The room we stayed in was the Zinfandel room. The rooms are similar to one another, except the prices. It was a bit pricey, but was worth it. We had stayed on a Monday night, so there was only one other couple at the inn. Free wine tasting & bottle.

We stayed at the newly renovated Summerwood Inn in Janaury to celebrate our 35th anniversary and it is gorgeous. The rooms are clean and beautifully decorated with a fireplace. We were treated wonderful from when we arrived to leaving. The breakfast was so delicious from the Lemon ricotta pancakes to the delicious oatmeal. The evening appetizers serve with your choice of wine absolutely wonderful. We did not have to go out to dinner because the appetizers were plenty. In the evening they have dessert and coffee or tea. I felt like I was at my home that's how comfortable it is. We met a very nice couple and we just stayed talking in the beautiful lobby area enjoying the beautiful fireplace and sitting area. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. We plan on staying there again very soon.

We stayed one night at the summerwood inn. It is located in a good spot for a day of wine tasting. They serve appetizers and wine, dessert and coffee, and delicious breakfast. You also get a free bottle of wine and a free tasting at the winery. The rooms are nicely updated and clean, and they include a fireplace. Would definitely stay here again.

My husband & I have been Summerwood wine club members for several years and have visited the Paso Robles area many, many times, but have never stayed at the Inn. This year, for our 33rd wedding anniversary, we decided to stay at the newly refurbished and decorated Summerwood Inn. It was marvelous in all aspects. Each room is decorated differently: white with accents of grey, black, & taupe. All the rooms on the 2nd floor and the 3rd floor suite have a balcony to sit out on and enjoy the scenery. For breakfast you have a choice of 5 different scrumptious items like an omelette, Monte Cristos, bacon & eggs, the absolutely BEST orange juice you'll ever have, and coffee. But the pampering didn't end there. From 5 - 7 pm appetizers and wine are served and they were different every day. You could easily eat this and not really need to eat dinner. Finally, after 8:00, dessert and coffee are available to top off your evening. When you arrive back in your room, the bed is turned down, caramels are on the bed, soft music is on the TV, and the light in the bathroom is dimmed. It's such a comfortable & relaxing feeling. The staff and the chef were friendly, cheerful, and pleasant. We would highly recommend staying at the Summerwood Inn and can't wait to go back there again - - soon!

Room Tip: There are 2 rooms downstairs for those who have trouble with stairs. All of the 2nd floor rooms and...
