We own a vineyard in Calistoga and are very familiar with "wine country" hotels and inns.

Our stay at Hotel Cheval was very disappointing and certainly not the "luxury" experience the hotel advertises.

First, we were up all night. Noise reverberates off the inner stone courtyard so that late night revelers keep other guests awake. Our first floor room was adjacent to the inner courtyard fireplace and sitting area and with the stone surrounding the inner courtyard, the partyers seemed like they were in our room. To make matters worse, management is well aware of this problem and does nothing about it. This design flaw may be incurable.

Second, the stairway to the 2nd floor was above our room's ceiling so we heard guests going up and down the stairs all night long. We cannot understand why anyone would design a stairway over a guest room.

Third, the plumbing is terrible and the bathroom water is either freezing cold or scalding hot. Clearly, the plumbers had little or no experience in engineering a multi-storied/multiple room hotel.

No available parking. We had to illegally park and run out before 9:00AM the next morning to move our car. The inadequte hotel parking was full.

We have never stayed at a hotel with such significant design flaws. Whoever developed the structure was unknowlegeable about hotel functionality and design. Could it be that there is scarce local talent as Paso Robles has no other "luxury" hotels.

Finally, Bad attitude. When we left the next day we advised the front desk that we were up all night due to the party in the inner courtyard and the stairway above the ceiling of our room. The receptionist nodded and admitted that she had heard the noise complaints before and laughed. They never offered to reduce our room rate or offer us a discount to return.

I had never been to Paso Robles before. This hotel was very well-styled and constructed (it's only about two years old), with very high quality features, fixtures and amenities. I stayed in two rooms because the first one's windows opened to an adjacent rooftop with loud ventilation fans. The next room was much quieter.

The rooms, especially the beds, linens and down comforters, are exceptionally comfortable and well thought out. Lots of wood and stone. The staff could not have been more helpful or good-natured. The hotel is centrally located in the town, within easy walking to many wine tasting rooms and restaurants.

The continental breakfast of fresh fruit, danish or muffin (cheese on request) and newspaper is left at your door in a sort of bucket. The only thing I would have changed is to include real milk to go with the coffee you can make in the room. They only supplied non-dairy whitener. But coffee is served in the hotel's bar each morning, so no huge deal.

I found the Cheval to be quite lovely and relaxing.

This is our 4th visit around different areas of California and we chose Paso Robles as we had never visited here before. We were hoping to explore some vineyards but to also take in some extraordinary scenery. Finding a deluxe hotel in smaller towns along the coastal route can sometimes prove difficult as these are few and far between in our experience. However, we felt very lucky when we came across this hotel by searching the reviews that fellow trip advisor writers had written (so thank you !!). The hotel has just been opened for just over a year and is fantastic, our only thought would be that Downtown Pasa Robles itself does not have much and was rather disappointing so after 1 night we left to explore LA. I am sure that you would not find a better hotel than this in the area and the staff were wonderfully helpful especially the English receptionist and Chad who works in the bar !!

We recently stayed at the Hotel Cheval in Paso Robles and had a wonderful time. I highly recommend this place for anyone seeking a romantic Wine Country weekend getaway.

The room was very plush and comfortable, with just the right mixture of antique and modern furnishings. The bed was so comfortable we didn't want to leave the room. If it wasn't for all the wine tasting on our agenda, and the need to eat, we probably wouldn't have left the room at all. The bathroom and oversized shower were very impressive as well.

The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly and they made our stay a true joy. The ladies in the reception area directed us to some outstanding restaurants and helped us weed through the myriad of ~170 wineries the area has to offer. As a result of their advice and expertise, we ended up coming home with cases of some really amazing wines.

The bartender, whose name eludes me(Sorry!) was extremely cordial and a very likable fellow. We chatted with him about his previous life as an actor on two separate occasions and we enjoyed his company very much. He also pours a great glass of wine :-)

We will certainly visit the Hotel Cheval again and we will recommend this fine boutique hotel to friends and family whenever the opportunity presents itself.

I would have to agree with some of the other reviews. Very rude, unfriendly staff. Took weeks to get an email answered, and only after calling. Check out some of the other hotels and B&B's instead.

I enjoyed my stay quite well.

From the lighted bar patio, comfy beds and the quaint hotel appeal (they have a horse carriage that will actually take you to dinner). Seems to be a good location for all the downtown and paso area has to offer; restaurants, wine bars/wineries, and shopping - if you must.

We went to the cheval for a fun filled wine tasting weekend with our friends and also to celebrate my birthday. the hotel itself is beautiful the rooms ,aameneties everything top notch , I found the staff especially the general manager to be very rude. we were also shushed by the fireplace on our first night ,we were with our group which was four couples ,and then we were chatting with some other guests that were out there after being shushed two times everyone went to bed very early. the next morning while we were waiting for our group to gather for our day of wine tasting the manager introduces herself to my husband and I and was so rude telling us that we all need to go somewhere else to hang out for the this evening , I have never in my life been treated like that we are all very successful people who travel quite often, we are not some young college rowdies!!

if you want to have any fun do not go to this hotel they are snobby and rude!!!!!.
