When I moved to Petaluma from Marin I was happy to be there, but missed the hiking and walking trails that are so prevalent in Marin. I was happy to discover Shollenberger Park. It's a great place for a nice walk and even for running. I take my dog (on leash) and we can go for a miles or miles depending on which way you go. We get to see the lovely Petaluma River with people paddle boarding or boating by, all sorts of wildlife including birds, rabbits and even once a feral cat. It's also great for elderly people as there are no hills. They have a restroom facility and dog bowls with water too. My hope is that the Dutra Asphalt plant does not go through - it would be awful as this is such an amazing and ecologically sensitive area. Go and enjoy and support it too!

This is an ok quick walk if you are in Petaluma, it's full of water birds and in summer and fall there's a pretty strong odor. Since you are basically in view of an office complex, I do this when I need a quick, convenient walk near Petaluma. And...then only in winter/early spring...No way would I travel out of my way to this park.

Not only is this a great place to walk but it's also a great place to bird watch. Easy access to Hwy 101 and Lakeville Hwy, a beautifully well maintained wetlands that gives you a feeling of being in the country yet close to town. Bring a picnic or go into town and eat at one of the many charming restaurants that make Petaluma such a wonderful place to live or visit.

Very well-maintained trails with 3 or 4 ways to go. Plenty of places to sit down in between. Super spot for bird watching. Dog walking on leashes is permitted too. A quiet and peaceful way to spend a morning or afternoon. Dress warm in winter.

If you're just wanting a little fresh air and light exercise, then Petaluma's Shollenberger Park is the perfect place. You can stop and park on the corner of S. McDowell and Lakeville Avenue and get your favourite beverage at Starbucks, then take the two block stroll to Shollenberger. Once you're at the park, which is also a waterfowl preserve, you can take the two-mile loop around the lake at your own pace, be it an invigorating jog or a leisurely stroll. It's a birders' paradise, too, teeming with egrets, grebes, mallards, killdeers, long-legged rails, herons, ever-present red-winged blackbirds and, in the Spring, the graceful mute swans. If you're lucky, you might even see cygnets and ducklings paddling alongside their mothers. If you're feeling inclined, you can double your exercise by taking in the Ellis Creek Wetlands on the other side.
