“could use some revamping”
Reviewed 5 November 2008

So here's the deal with the KonTiki. You can't beat the location. Clifftop above the beach, you walk down several stairs to get to beach. Pool overlooks beach. OK BUT, the place could use some revamping. There is lots of updating needed. Some stuff has been done, but there's ALOT to go. The staff----um, there's a couple of nice people but the rest make you feel like you owe your stay to them and don't treat you with the respect that you feel like you need when you are enjoying a vacation. An occassional smile would be nice. Plan on eating breakfast elsewhere if you are hungry---bagels and juice/coffee don't cut it for most.

After staying for a night at the Kon Tiki Inn in 2006, we relived the experience in 2008

You just cannot fault this hotel for views, cleanliness and above all value for money

Had no problems with staff - very courteous and helpful - it was misty during our stay (disappointment) but the drop off to sleep with the sound of the crashing ocean outside your window is unforgettable

The next time we hope to stay for longer ... the Kon Tiki Inn cannot be beaten

Picked this hotel from TA reports. Great choice – lived up to expectations and more. Would stay there again certainly. Booked a King room had a King & Queen bed in the room we were given. Balcony overlooking the sea. Great sun sets when we were there. Nice heated pool big enough to swim & two Hot Tubs. Also you can use free the leisure centre across the parking lot for free – just get a pass. There is a bigger pool there but it is for swimming only not leisure and all the other types of things like gym etc. Easy to get to off the interstate. Rooms were clean and well appointed. The breakfast was continental but juice, fruit, toast, bagels pastries available so plenty of choice and plenty of supplies.

We only stayed here for 1 night Sunday 7th September. We had a ground floor room with fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean. The bar attached at Steamers restaurant was great, the barman was very friendly and even offered to take my husband and I to a bar in town when this one was closing early as it was Sunday. We awoke the following morning to what we were told was a typical morning at this time of year with a marine mist, grey and murky but just listening to the ocean hitting the shore made up for this. Opening up the patio doors we were delighted to see dolphins jumping around and swimming in the ocean. We spent the morning walking on the beach and watching the dolphins before we regrettably had to leave on our journey along the Pacific Highway. Our only regret was that we did not stay at the Kon Tiki for longer. Next time! The room was huge, clean and with coffee facilities, the continental breakfast was good and the staff were very helpful.

I read a review on this hotel and made notes for my visit to California as we did not know if it would tie in with our trip.
We arrived mid morning to see if they had any vacancies and they told us we would have to be put on a waiting list as they did not know if everyone would check out that day.
We were lucky enough to get the last room later that day.
All the large rooms have a sea view with balcony the views are fantastic of the ocean and Pismo Pier.
There is a pool and two spas in the grounds.
All guests have free access to a fully equipped sports centre on site which has an indoor swimming pool and you can join in any of the classes.
The hotel also has Restaurant and laundry on site.
It is an easy walk into Pismo itself where there are some good restaurants.
The room rate was so reasonable for the standard and location of the accommodation. We would go back there tomorrow if we could.

I'm sitting on the sofa in room 309 here at the Kon Tiki as I write this, our last morning here, on our honeymoon September 26 through September 30. Our stay here has been wonferful!

The important stuff first: The room is clean and spotless. The decor fits the theme of the hotel perfectly and everything you need is here, except a little mini-microwave. I stayed at the Kon Tiki almost 15 years ago on a family vacation and remembered it fondly, so I thought it might be good for the honeymoon.

There isn't a bad view from this hotel -- all rooms have an ocean view as this is an ocean front hotel. To get to the beach, you have to navigate a very tall staircase, but it is worth the climb up and down. The continental breakfast was perfect for us and is available just adjacent to the property in a room attached to the Steamers Restaurant. The breakfast is light and has what you need to start your day; muffins and danishes, etc., as well as juice, coffee, even a banana or apple. We did this each morning as it was lighter than a heavy breakfast, saving our money for our only other meal of the day, a late lunch/early dinner wherever we were at. The staff of the Kon Tiki were all friendly and helpful and the cleaning service did a great job keeping our room clean -- was great returning to the room after a fun day all vacuumed and freshened up. Oh, and sunsets each evening were spectacular! You hear the waves crashing on the beach all night long...

The pool and spas are great and, as in most places, are as pleasant as the other people using them. There was a family who rushed to hog the most western-facing spa, which irritated my wife when she went to step in -- a bunch of little kids jumping in, and their mom stated, "We've been waiting for this one for an hour and a half." They had previously had the other spa all to themselves for a good deal of time. Apparently filling one spa with splashing brats wasn't good enough for them. But ignorant, inconsiderate people don't reflect on the Kon Tiki.

We spent the first full day touring Hearst Castle, then went further north to see the elephant seals sunning on the beach. We stopped in Cambria to look around and have dinner before returning to Pismo. We spent the second day in Morro Bay looking in the shops and having lunch. The third day we returned to Morro Bay and went on a whale watching trip. It was AMAZING! We were treated to a show apparently not often seen, according to our captain -- two whales "waving" at us with their tales and doing full-body leaps out of the water. They were also swimming and "playing" with the sea lions! It was fantastic -- the captain said he had NEVER seen that interaction between the whales and sea lions before. Our group aboard the boat cheered them on! It was very exciting and certainly a highlight of our trip. We check out today and plan to head south on our way out to visit Solvang, further down and off Highway 101.

We enjoyed some great restaurants, too... Steamers next door to the Kon Tiki is not bad, though pricey. It seems the best meals are sometimes the least expensive. In Cambria, we ate at a nice Italian place called Mustache Pete's... a little pricey but HUGE portions. In Morro Bay, we enjoyed lunch at The Outrigger, which was fun as just outside the window some sea lions commandeered a docked boat and were barking at us! In Pismo, we had awesome fish and chips at the Pierside Cafe, which is right down by the water. Service was just so-so, but the food was extremely good!

We really enjoyed our time at the Kon Tiki and look forward to a return trip as soon as possible! I highly recommend the hotel when staying in Pismo... you will love it! Oh, yes, and I should mention that they have free wireless internet, which is how I'm able to post this while still here!

We can't wait to go back again. This was the most relaxing hotel I've ever stayed in. It is not the fanciest, but nice enough and was very clean and no odors in the room or carpet.. We were on the 2nd floor and I thought it might be a little noisy with people over us and under us as well as on each side. But to my amazement, we never heard any noise at all from our neighbors, not even the usual water pipe noise of their showers in the morning, or maid carts in the hallway. I asked why so quiet and they told me the walls are concrete. We kept our balcony door open and of course you could hear in distance people in pool occacionally, but mostly the sound of the ocean waves, which I love to hear. The view is FANTASTIC and I love the fact that every room here has an oceanfront view as I read reviews from neighboring hotels that promised oceanfront rooms at booking, but those rooms were unavailable when they arrived and they were stuck with parking lot views. You know you will absolutely have oceanfront room here. The front desk staff were very pleasant and kind. This is a great place to RELAX with a view. My 10 year old also loved it and made friends at the pool.
