“Charming, historic hotel”
Reviewed 12 November 2012

We're fans of historic hotels--creaks and quirks are part of the charm, but this one was pretty quiet. Staff was attentive, and the history's fun. Great location in on Placerville's main drag--check out the candy store!

Came up with three couples for our annual Apple Hill Weekend and enjoyed every moment. We have been coming to Placerville and to the Cary House Hotel for ten years. We love the location on main street and location to Apple Hill (10 minutes). We had a great dinner at Hey Days across the street and drinks at the Liars Bench across the street from the hotel.

The hotel is historic and old and yes is not for everyone. We love it. We each had a king bed suite and slept very well. The staff is very friendly and lobby is inviting and comfortable. Does it need some upgrades yes but it still doesn't take away from the charm of the 1850's. Our room was lacking a few things but nothing to fuss about. We had breakfast as Mels and enjoyed a day at Apple Hill.

Room Tip: King Suite was nice

We travel quite a buit to gold country in California and we have stayed in lots of different types of places. We have stayed in several historic hotels as well. The Cary House DOES NOT compare to the National Hotel in Jamestown, The Holbrooke in Grass Valley, Murphy's Hotel in Murphy, Hotel Leger in Mokelummne Hill, etc. These other hotels have tried to maintain some level of service and amenities despite hard economic times. The Cary House has not and their attitude when you call reflects that. Placerville is a wonderful gold town with great attractions, aklthiough some are an hour away or so. Apple Hill is great this time of year (15 min. from Placerville)!
The lobby of the Cary House is neat and kept up well. That is not the story with the room we stayed in (king suite). Room was way too expensive for what you get. But, it seems as if they just don't care. Not many places to stay in Placerville (some B &Bs).
As an aside, The national Hotel in Jackson, CA has just been completely remodeled and is now a 4-5 star property. We toured it and it is gorgeous!! Here is where the higher prices might be worth it. Also, LOTS to see in and around Jackson, CA. Hopefully, this restored treasure will help Jackson revitalize its touristy downtown.

Charming hotel with an interesting history. We stubled across this property on a weekend getaway and enjoyed the charming downtown and little antique shops. The wine-bar next door was propbably the highlight of the stay. The room was spacious, but worn-down. Noise insulation was nil and the bar across the street closes at 1AM..... if you face the front of the hotel, take note of that fact if you plan on sleeping early! The employees were friendly and, even if they are not on property overnight, they go out of their way to lend a hand. Breakfast was average, and the internet was slow. We actually enjoyed the stay (likely due to the age of the place and its history) and may return, but would request a room in the rear of the property as we are not so interested in hearing all the drunk yelling all night coming from the bar.

Room Tip: Bar across the street = Loud till late!!!

You'll see recurring complaints for this hotel for a good reason. There is no hot water in the morning - but chances are good there will be hot water in the evening so plan accordingly. Breakfast is kinda lame: muffins, yogurt, cereal - but you always have the option of going out for breakfast like you would if you were staying at a road motel for about the same price. The walls are paper thin - seriously. Thin. I happen to travel with ear plugs. The bed was WAY to soft for me to be comfortable.

However, the hotel is charming in an old rustic way and perfectly located for walking around town. Free parking. The staff was friendly and our room and bathroom were clean - every thing in working order. I didn't mind mis-matched old furniture or the doilies and calico print wall paper...lends to the theme and charm of the place. Personally I'd rather stay someplace like this, with a little personality quirky as it might be, than a sterile, cloned motel room. If I could be guaranteed a firmer mattress, I'd stay again.

Room Tip: Probably quieter on the upper floors.

You definitely get the feeling you're going back in time while in the Cary House because of the furnishings and overall interior design. You really get the feeling of going back in time when you walk into your bathroom and read a very small sign that says wait up to 10 minutes for the hot water to get to your room. You're suppose to simply leave it running for that period of time! NEVER GOT THE HOT WATER! If this only applies to level 4, then don't book a room on level 4! The air conditioning didn't work either! We really could have used hot water and A/C. For the price of the room especially, I would have expected at least the standard. The room was very clean. The staff was friendly. You can get that stuff at Motel 6. The location is awesome. I'll give the Cary House that.

Room Tip: I'm assuming that if you book a room on the first floor you'll get a warm to hot shower! I c...

Could be nice but run down!!! For the cost I expected a bed that did not match the age of the hotel. There are other great B&Bs in town. The lobby looks great and then you hit the hallway. They use the word suite..... A chair in the room does not count as a suite.
