Restored from the 1800s with mattresses from the same era, tiny rooms, and old time drunks hollering in the street at 3 AM, Unfortunately, priced like 2005 hotels. Avoid at all costs,

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cary House. The staff was very knowledgeable and happy to answer our questions about the surrounding gold country. Our room, located on the second floor, was very clean and attractively decorated, with the most comfortable hotel bed I've come across in a long time. Noise was minimal, parking convenient. In the past, I have paid much more to stay in the area's chain hotels, but decided to try the Cary House. It is by far the best value for the money. If you are tired of those mediocre, institution-type hotels, you will find a stay at the Cary House a welcome change.

Well, the lobby is splendid but the rooms are 1970's style remodel with one or two sorry relics from Placerville's historic past. Our room contained a wrinkled poster print of a Victorian-era woman, and a really sorry replica vase. The room seriously looked a Motel 6 room--and the place isn't cheap! I have never cared enough to write a review of a hotel room until I stayed at the Cary House. Oh yeah, don't forget that the whole place was gutted by a fire some years back--run, do not walk, away from this place!

While searching for accommodations in Placerville for a group overnight trip to the Apple Hill area, we were recommended to Carey House Hotel for our budget and needs for an elevator. Well, it is historic! The lobby has plenty of visual history, although it's very dark and the lighting is bad. They do have an elevator...very historic. It is an old type of elevator that looks like a door and then when you open it you have to slide the expansion screen. The worse part of all is that we had elderly in our group. The step into the elevator (I tripped more than once, as you can’t see that the elevator is not flush with the floor upon entering or exiting) is very dangerous. This happened numerous times, you would either have to step up, or down depending on which floor you stopped. I had to remind people getting in or out of the elevator of this danger, something that was clearly present and seemed to be ignored by the staff. The rooms are clean, although old and basic. They remind me of an old residential hotel that rents out rooms by the week or month. Each room had a small kitchenette (these were very outdated). The bathrooms need touch up paint and a real good scrub, the tubs and showers also lack grab bars for safety. When I mentioned this on the way out I was told that some rooms have them, and some don't. The four rooms we booked did not have any. The mattresses were soft, they give you two flat pillows on a king size bed (there were two more of the same old pillows in the closet) my sheet had been patched...no further explanation needed. Lastly, if you do have to stay here and want a good nights sleep, request a room in the back of the hotel. We faced the street and were subject to the noise and yelling from the two bars across the street; until they closed...then it was highway noise after that.

We stayed in this historic hotel on Placerville's Main Street three nights in May 2004. The hotel's lobby has been beautifully restored and furnished with antiques. Our room on the fourth floor was delightfully named and furnished with a Mark Twain theme. Mr. Twain along with other luminaries allegedly stayed at the hotel in years past. The complimintary buffet breakfast served in a separate room on the first floor was excellent. Its menu included pastries, dry cereal, fruit, yogurt, orange juice, and beverages. Each morning after breakfast, we stepped out of the hotel and enjoyed a walk in Placerville's business district before it became busy. The immediate area included the Original Thomas Kinkade Gallery, restaurants, and gift shops. We will stay here again.
