Manchester Beach is unique to our coastal area because of it's long swatch of sand. Most of the beaches in this area are pocket beaches, surrounded by rocky headlands or outcroppings. This wide open wild beach gets a lot of wind and wild weather, making it less crowded than many other California beaches. Beautiful drives to get there, either from the north or south on Highway 1. There's a campground for those who can enjoy a longer stay, but I always enjoy going for a day trip - beach combing, and being open to any surprises in weather.

We tent camped at the Manchester Beach KOA in Mendicino County in California during the 4th of July week. The weather was sunny but cool - just what we wanted! The check-in was slow because the front office procedures seemed inefficient and unable to handle more than one person at a time. People have to stand in line to buy things at the store and wait for people to check-in to the camp. But the staff was friendly and helpful. Once we were checked in we found our particular campsite without a problem. It was not crowded and the tent and screen went up fast. The campgrounds were clean and featured a swimming pool, bathrooms with clean showers, a large kitchen to share with others if you don't want to use a small camp stove and grill. In the evenings there was an ice cream social, Karaoke, and a large community fire pit to gather - though each campsite has its own fire pit, too. A nice place to get away. Best of all for us was a dog park within the campsite that our dogs loved. It was a nice place to take them off leash so they could run around and do their business. We will return but I want to stay in the tent sites closer to the ocean because it is more secluded from the RVs and cabins.

It's a long stretch of beach with fine gray sand, littered with kelp, driftwood, and bits of wildlife. It's great for a long walk, sand castles, and dodging the surf. But it is unimproved and has few restrooms. The undertow makes it unsafe for swimming. Enjoy it for what it is.
