Owner description: The Point Arena Lighthouse stands as an iconic figure on the landscape of the American Pacific Coast. No other lighthouse offers such a fully interactive experience in the exchange between history, science and natural beauty. Sometimes brilliantly sunny, other times fog-shrouded and mysterious, always ruggedly beautiful, the lighthouse is a place to find something different, a place where the romance is real and the experience is profound. Surrounded by water on three sides, and shouldered adjacent to the Point Arena/Stornetta Public Lands, the Point Arena Lighthouse is the premiere visitor destination in Mendocino County. It is also one of the best whale watching spots on the North Coast, with the annual Gray Whale migration from late November through May, Humpbacks throughout the year, the occasional pod of transient Killer Whales and even Blue Whales. Watch for the spouts, tails and breaches from the top of the Tower and from the trails and gazebo. With nightly lodging and tours of the lighthouse offered daily, what will you discover on your next visit?

I love to visit lighthouses, ever since living near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and Point Arena was a special one to add to the list! This lighthouse sits on a narrow, rugged point of land on the Pacific coast south of Mendocino, and is still operating and open to the public. We lucked out with a sunny day in the area, and took advantage of the option to climb to the top and enjoy the 360 view. The exhibit in the museum provides the interesting backstory of the lighthouse plus the movie "Forever Young" filmed here. In addition, we were able to stay in one of the ~4 keeper's "cottages" overnight; these sit right next to the lighthouse and make you feel what a lonely spot this can be.

First time visiting a lighthouse; climbed all 145 steps and it was worth the climb, great view and whale watching experience. Guide was very knowledgeable learned quite a bit. Museum was great. Will definitely return again. Great experience, beautiful setting.

This was very interesting and educational. Worth it to see this place and the coastline. The geology in this area is fascinating and I learned that Point Arena is the closest point on the mainland to Hawaii!

We take friends here when we do the "tourist thing". They charge to climb the lighthouse stairs and everyone should do this at least once if they are able. The climb requires a bit of effort but the view is well worth it.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and they feature a lot of history of the area and the light house in the museum.

If you are driving on State Route 1 along the California coast between Mendocino and Bodega Bay (north of San Francisco), the Point Arena Lighthouse and Museum offers a wonderful, informative and pleasant stop. The Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers have done an outstanding job of taking over and overseeing the care and maintenance of the lighthouse! Climb to the top of the Lighthouse for a great view, and learn a bit about maritime history on the California coast in the Museum. Pleasant, informative staff. And if you want to stay in an out-of-the-way place, there are the former homes of the lighthouse keepers available for staying overnight.
