Black Heron Inn is just outside Point Reyes Station which has a couple good restaurants and a charming casual ambience. Point Reyes National Seashore is just a few minutes away with great hikes and views.
At the inn itself, we stayed in the Bay View suite which was roomy, clean, and well stocked with basic food. So it's self-serve which suited us fine. There's a very good market nearby.
More outstanding was that the suite has a picture window and deck with a wonderful view towards Tomales Bay. You could see the lower end of the bay, nearby pastureland with cows, and Inverness ridge in the Point Reyes National Seashore.
On the grounds itself, they have a pond hosting night herons. We also saw black tailed deer and turkeys on the grounds. If you take a walk back down the long gravel driveway in the evening you might see great white egrets flocking to a tree to roost.
The owners were not at home. We learned later that one of them was quite ill. A guy living there, who seemed to be managing the place in their absence, showed us in and was a pleasure to talk with about the area.
Had a hard time finding the place at first. The street numbering seems to be out of order.

We had the Grand view suite which has a great view and balcony. The location can not be beat. We did not like that the bedroom was up a steep stairs and the bathroom was downstairs so if you take that room be sure that does not bother you. The bedroom felt like it was decorated for your grandmother. The closets through out the space were locked which felt odd. You are connected to the main house that I assume the owners like in by a glass door that is covered by a curtain.
We never saw the owner and let ourselves into our room because we knew its name. We would have liked to been greeted and shown around.

Room Tip: I would stay in the two rooms downstairs that are not connected to the main house in the same way an...

Great location n beautiful place. Had cows in the pasture n wild turkeys greet us in the morning. Highly recommend. The room was fantastic with a great view (Bay suite). Even had binoculars in the room. Close enough to town, but far enough for privacy.

Two nights at this unusual B&B was a wonderful respite. We stayed in the Bayview room, which is fully equipped with everything you would need - coffee, tea, high quality fruit (plums, Gala apples, tangerines,) coffee cake, orange juice, 2% milk, butter, etc. So it's perfect for those who cherish their privacy and can live without a hot breakfast. The view of the bay is spectacular; you can spot many birds & other critters with the supplied binoculars. The Adirondack chairs on the shared deck are very comfortable. Bill replaced our broken reading lamp very quickly. Wireless internet worked perfectly. Great shower, lots of hot water.
I recommend that you bring some supplies for picnicking with you if possible. The little town of Pt. Reyes Station does have a grocery with incredibly high prices - after all, this is Marin County. We ate at Nick's Cove in Marshall one night. BBQ oysters are the specialty in this area, and they are delicious!
Hiking & walking in Pt. Reyes is great. So many trails, so little time. And all the parking is free!

Room Tip: For 2 people, recommend Bayview on first floor. Second floor suite would be quieter but costs more.

We were very pleased with the Black Heron Inn. We were there midweek so we were the only guests which made it even more serene and quiet. The room was clean, nicely decorated, spacious, and equiped with what we needed. A coffee maker with great coffee, silverware and dishes, toaster....and then the "breakfast" of milk, orange juice, butter and baked good provided in the mini refrigerator. Extreme wind kept us from the deck chairs but our fantastic view from the kitchen table was grand! Overlooking the marshland and hillside we saw a momma turkey and babies, a family of coyotes, quail, and cows.

1) Gorgeous views of salt marshland and a rolling cow pasture.
2) A beautiful place for a morning hike.
3) They supply binoculars for guests! How adorable is that?
4) We saw the proprietors maybe once in a four-day stay. This was awesome.
5) Instead of requiring you to be at breakfast every morning, they leave you some fruit, cereal, and fixin's and you fend for yourself. I prefer this.
6) My only criticism: even though very few people walked by our room during our stay (the Ridge Room), we still felt like we had to stay covered up at all times when the shades were open because the room is at ground level and the large picture window would provide any passers-by with an eyeful.
7) The Ridge Room was well-appointed and comfortably laid out. The shower was tiny but the bathroom was cozy, and I applaud the non-frumpy interior decoration.
8) Would and will definitely return. This time, we'll go for the upstairs suite.

The view from your window at the Black Heron Inn includes fields, rolling hills and Tomales Bay in the distance. The vistas are a perfect complement to the extraordinary beauty of the Point Reyes National Seashore. While the location is a couple minutes outside of Point Reyes Station, the directions on their web site are easy to follow.
The Black Heron is not an "Inn" in the traditional image of lodging with common areas and served meals. It is, however, a wonderful Bed and Breakfast with large, clean, wood accented rooms, great views, a comfortable bed. So, if you're looking for a "meet the innkeeper" experience, this is not it. We stayed in the Ridge Room, which included bathrobes, binoculars, dvd player with a selection of DVD's, recent magazines (New Yorker, Travel and Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, etc.), toaster, coffee maker, electric tea pot and a list of local restaurants and shops. From the veranda with rocking chairs outside our room, we judged the Bay Room to the similar to the Ridge Room. The suite upstairs is significantly larger.
The keys and welcome materials were in the mailbox outside the room, when we arrived. Our breakfast for the following morning was in the room and included 2 loaves of homemade bread, chocolate and almond biscotti, apples, bananas, oranges, two dry cereals, milk, butter, orange juice, coffee and a great assortment of teas. That was perfect for us.
We felt we had made an excellent choice and recommend the Black Heron Inn.

Room Tip: Both the Ridge and Bay Rooms have the same wonderful view.
