We went for just a night as a much needed break, and my husband booked it as a surprise. The room we stayed in was the Mad Cow (I think) and it was decorated in a funky and slightly outrageous style, with huge murals of cows and retro furnishings. The room was clean, comfortable and very well equipped. The bed was so comfortable that we barely managed to get into breakfast in time! I was worried about being so close to the road but the windows were double glazed and there were very thick velvet curtains which helped. We had a pretty good dinner in the dining room downstairs, but to be honest I remember the food less than the clientele. I don't know if we were 'lucky' but there was a rather amazing international cross section of guests which we couldn't help but be slightly fascinated by. The wine was excellent and the service was very good too. The food was good and portions large but nothing was particularly outstanding. I would agree that the stairs and some public areas could do with a good clean, but the owners were helpful and friendly and we would go again.

Room Tip: I'd suggest asking for one away from the main road.

Went there for Business Lunch,16/04/14, with 2 x customers and 2 colleagues. Never seen the bar so busy!! Ordered drinks and food, wanted a table for 5. Bar staff pointed out one was being vacated, so went over to wait for table to be cleared. That's when the problem started!! Family of 5 seated at table by door were told(not asked) to move away from the door!!. The wife asked if they wanted the family to leave the place!! I then got told(not asked) that they should have the table that I was standing by, waiting to be cleared!! Very abrupt in her manner. She (table clearer) clearly had no customer skills!! Bar staff seemed embarrassed by her! Won't be going back in a hurry, will probably try the Riverside Hotel instead!

As the restaurant was full, I took a table in the bar to order from the restaurant menu. The pub had a good atmosphere but we really did not expect quite the quality of food we experienced. Wonderful food!

Was eagerly excited after finding The Bull's website and booking a room as it looked so wonderful. After checking in I went off to find my room and what hit me most was how grubby everything looked. The stairs clearly hadn't been hoovered for some time and paintwork is shabby. In my room there was someone else's hair on the carpet, coffee dribbles down the sides of the mugs, and an extremely uncomfortable old mattress which tilted badly downhill at the head end of the bed. There was no soap in the bathroom (apparently not eco friendly due to wastage) - liquid soap could have been provided???? I have to compliment them on the new shower in the bathroom, huge and wonderful.

The meal in the restaurant was lovely although breakfast was basic (no fruit/cereals/yoghurt etc laid out and everything on the breakfast menu was extra.

Very disappointing night for the money!

We have had a further two meals at this restaurant/pub and cant fault it. Staff exceptionally friendly and professional. More than happy to adapt the menu to create something specifically for us as vegetarians. Its been more than a year since we last visited and the owners remembered not only us but what we didnt like or were allergic to foodwise. A fantastic dining experience - to be totally recommended. Popped in for breakfast and another superb experience - food well sourced and cooked perfectly, Happy to pay that bit more for such good quality food and service. Well done Cheryl, Wayne, Sonia, Smiffy and the team

not sure if The Bull thinks its someting its not or its just pricey because there isnt much else to choose from in the area.
The room was very small...the windows were so rotten you could see daylight between the frames...this quirky feature soon became quite an annoying draught in the middle of the night...but i was awake anyway as the noise of the trucks on the busy adjacent road had no trouble coming in due to the lack of double glazing.
They ask you not to put hot drinks on the solid wood furniture....but plenty of people have...shame about all the rings from mugs it gives it a shoddy uncared for appearance...the room was tastefully decorated...had...kettle...iron...suitcase stand...although the room was too small to make use of the latter....bathroom was recently refurbished...shower was hot...nice towels...
The music from the bar can clearly be heard in the rooms...annoying if you wanted to sleep before 10.30....but didnt bother me in truth.
Dinner was nice...soup was excellent..fish and chips is fish and chips whether its once twice or thrice cooked but hot and tasty...as was breakfast...sausage and bacon was very good.
when checking out the receptionist didnt ask me if i enjoyed my stay...if there were any comments...will they see me again...hmmmm..
I'd certainly go back for the food and the atmosphere in the bar...but not to stay in that room for £85.. as a very regular business traveller i would certainy expect a lot more for that much money midweek.
