First, let me preface by saying the physical facilities and staff of the hotel are great, the views sublime. But what is buried in the fine print is that this hotel 1) hosts conventions (in our case, a very loud convention upon our arrival 6/18) and 2) is not an entirely "non-smoking" hotel. To the first point, we had hoped for a quiet getaway for two from LA: What we encountered at dinner were tables of people swearing and drinking. We asked the waiter to re-seat us (twice!) over by the outside bar area to avoid the noise. Second, if you don't like smoking, this is not your place. There are actually three designated smoking areas (according to the front desk), and we encountered people at the pools, by the restaurants, and on the property smoking cigars and cigarettes. We called the front desk: They couldn't help. Our advice: Call first to see if there is a convention booked. It's likely a wonderful place to stay when they're not catering to the convention crowd.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms on the side of the restaurant and non-adult pool.

What a luxurious oasis this place is... from the moment you drive up their scenic approach.... to the fragrance in the lobby... you know that you have "changed channels"!

From the restaurant we were able to enjoy great views of the valley below and we enjoyed watching the stars from their terrace.

Pool was excellent.

Mostly it was the terrific service and the fine amenities that you would expect from a Ritz-Carlton resort.

Top notch hotel with excellent service. Free water bottles everywhere... I guess the incredible heat down here is the reason for the free water. The pool was excellent and they were quick to make sure we had an umbrella. Free suntan lotion nearby and quick pool service with drinks and food.

The service at the RC property is superlative as expected, the location, best in the desert, Edge restaurant has great views and very good food and service, State & Fare has also good drinks and food, but the caveat to this property in its entirety is it’s definitely not a five star. The exterior is very dated, rooms and hallways dark, beds have bad sinkholes, rugs torn and tattered, pool umbrellas stained and torn, at least in the adult pool, which is only pool we utilize. The pool which should be chic and inviting, is reminiscent of a Westin timeshare like the rest of property, definitely not what would be expected at a Ritz Carlton.

We stopped on our journey from Arizona on impulse, because we saw a price drop on Bookings.com. The property is beautifully located. We found ourselves enjoying a lovely meal with a fine bottle of Sauvignon Blanc overlooking the pool and the desert in the background. It was a simply magical evening that we enjoyed enormously. The pool is really great, with super comfortable loungers.Yes, it is an expensive 5 star property. But you do get what you pay for. All in our overnight stay cost $400 and it felt like a bargain for the enjoyment we experienced. I could happily live there if they ever want a writer in residence.

Room Tip: Pool access helps.
