Great place to get outside, enjoy a healthy walk and take in the beauty of our area. Good for singles and families. The trails go on forever and ever.

A nice place to enter this trail if you want some hills to walk, run or bike, would be to park on Harlan Drive which is off of Quartz Hill. If you prefer a flat bike/hike or walk/run experience (both are alongside the Sacramento River) you will park off of the Court Street entrance. Bring water to stay hydrated and wear a hat and sunscreen. On the 'flat (south) side, there is a bathroom and water fountain at the entrance. On the hilly (north) side, there is a drinking fountain at the end of Harlan just at the start of the trail but you need to hike in about 1.5 miles (a guess) to use a restroom. The trail is divided by a broken yellow line and there is etiquette for all trail users (a sign at the beginning spells it out) but if you are passing someone, give them ample notice as you approach from behind and say something like, "Passing on your left!" There are benches maybe a quarter-mile or so--I don't know if there is any set pattern but if you need an occasional rest, they are usually placed along the scenic Sacramento River.

My wonderful husband and I visited this parkway and bay by chance after signing up for the Turtle Bay/Lions Half Marathon last October. Thought it would be a relaxing departure from the usual big city races and venues. The race was very small-town, but/and full of heart, but the surprise came with the beautiful route up and down the Sacramento River from the iconic Sundial Bridge which is an artistic architectural wonder. The paths along the river were safe, wide, and well maintained. They would loom upward with views and swing down into ever-changing wildlife. The water is blue and clear. Scenic dimension. There were clean bathrooms at handy distances along the way. I passed people of all kinds and exchanged many pleasantries. There is a place of interest for everyone in the family: hiking, biking, running, walking, kayaking, art, arboretum/botanical garden, fishing, wildlife, etc. I hate to rag on my own city of five generations, but the Sacramento River in the town of it's namesake could NOT have a place this pristine for the public to enjoy. There would be homeless, broken bottles, needles, and questionable sorts on the paths. The feel is slow, relaxed, stress-free. I totally misjudged Redding as a hick town, but based on this gem, I can see where their tax dollars are going..to public improvements...and plan to come back again.

We bring our bikes when we are camping at Shasta Lake and come and bike on this trail. It is great - pretty flat and so scenic. You are biking along the river the whole way. Not too hot with breeze from bike movement. If you want some exertion, you can elect to go up Heartrate Hill at the end for a steep climb. There is a Italian Ice stand down at the bridge for your reward after. The Sundial bridge is beautiful. This is a "must-do" part of our trip now. Last year we did it twice in the week we were there. Easy and plentiful parking.

People come from all over to see the Sacramento River Trail. At turtle bay they have an Aquarium that is really interesting and a Must See place. The trail has been having a lot of assaults and is not safe to jog alone. We like riding our bikes on the trail as a family. It is very pretty.
