There are so many vegetarians and vegans these days that it surprises me when I come to a place this marvelous and can't find good, hearty vegetarian options. The only sandwich on the menu that doesn't include meat is a Swiss cheese one, piled HIGH with Swiss cheese, I must add. It's a bit much. There doesn't seem to be a willingness on the part of the staff--who are otherwise wonderful, helpful, attentive, and super-friendly--to either improvise a custom-made sandwich on the spot or even say that they will consider adding a good vegetarian sandwich or two to the menu. They suggest their salads, but for someone wanting a hearty lunch, that's not an adequate alternative. Add to this the iffy parking situation, and I'm not sure that we'll be back.
Having griped about the menu's neglect of a segment of the population, it must be noted that there are some GREAT plusses to Back Street: A lovely, shady courtyard that is pleasant even on 100-degree days by offering misters and a trickling fountain, a gardenlike atmosphere, the super-friendly folk who work there, the "family business" feel, and of course... the banana creme pie! Well worth visiting again and again if your tastes match the menu.
