Stayed at the Citizen for an in town get away for just the two of us. Originally reserved a junior suite but got a great surprise with an e-mail follow up offering a stand by e-upgrade for a reduced rate to a two room suite. Got to the hotel and sure enough they upgraded us to a great two room suite for an additional $14, what a deal! The room was great with cool little extras here and there that made our time memorable. Great views of the city from the 10th floor. Dined at the Grange restaurant and it is fabulous also. If you are in Sac and want an intimate "boutique" experience, the Citizen is the place. Thanks to the management for running a top rate hotel!

Just recently stayed to attend a conference at the nearby convention center. A short 3 block walk away. Took a cab into downtown and is about a 20 minute hop.
Location is great being near the Capital, restaurants and shopping. Building was older and feels like it has history even though hotel is only a few hears old. It is a historic building that use to be offices for docs and lawyers from the early 1900's from what I was told. Great seating and political artwork abound in the property. Great complimentary wine hour in the evening for guests.
Room is decent size, but was in a corner. Had a great view of the capital building. All the tech needs, wi fi, flat screen with HD and ipod dock. There was even a Mac Mini available to use in room. Bed is plush with pillowtop and very comfy comforter. bathroom is decent size, but mine had a shower only which was fine with me. Loved that they had a Kuerig K-cup coffee maker in the room with Diedrichs coffee!
Dining-did both the Grange restaurant and in room dining. Both were fantastic and the dishes wear outstanding. The try the charcutrie plate, calmari, short rib and gnocchi! All were sublime and locally sourced. The bar at Grange was hopping both nights I was there and seems to be a fave with the politicos who work down the street.
Definitely my choice for my next sales calls in Sac-town. If you are looking for a nice personable boutique hotel with character, this is the place!

The Citizen is a nice boutique hotel, similar in character to Kimpton hotels. The bedroom was quite small - great for one but would be cramped for 2. The iPod clock was a nice touch and the bed and pillows were very comfortable - I had a great sleep. Get a room on the 8th floor or higher. My room was directly over the 7th floor meeting room and I could hear the presenters from time to time. The 7th floor gets very crowded with meeting attendees. I got an amazing rate on Hotwire ($89) which cannot be beat! The Temple cafe around the corner is awesome. There's a great little take-out place tucked into the park across the street for excellent fish tacos, salads.

My wife and I stayed at the Citizen for a wedding and found the hotel a pleasure. First a few words of warning. It is an old hotel that has been nicely refurbished. Old hotels have smaller rooms and much less storage. Parking was expensive at $25.00 a day with unlimited in and outs. If you have a car there is no real way to avoid it and the valets were excellent. Wireless internet is available for a price. I really feel all hotels should give this service away now as a cost of doing business. Fortunately I was able to tether through my cell phone and get by.
Now that I'm through complaining, the rooms were stylishly redone in very good taste. The bathroom was nice, large and pleasant with only a shower. The appointments in the room were first class.
If you are conscious of an old hotels limitations, you'll find the Citizen an excellent choice.
Give the Grange restaurant a try as well.

Good looking hotel and very nice staff but the rooms are the smallest that I have ever encountered. I am currently brewing coffee in the bathroom coffee maker ( Keurig) because it did not fit on the desk with my computer or in the armoire where it was stored. Moreover, they want you to waive housekeeping in an attempt to be green. Geez, if your trip is longer than a day you have a problem.

With rooms this small everything should be free internet, valet parking and breakfast.

Thank you for your feedback, I apologize that you found the room size detrimental to your stay. The hotel is a historic building and as such our rooms are of different sizes and shapes, some small, others much larger.

The Green Dreams program is designed to preserve our natural resources and is entirely optional. Many guests really enjoy it but for others, traditional housekeeping service is preferred. We are happy to do either.

Thank you again for the valuable feedback.

We had an event at the Sacramento Convention Center and have stayed before at the Hyatt and Sheraton before. Decided to try the Citizen and were not disappointed at the quality of location, helpfulness of the staff and amenities of the room. A welcome addition to the room was a large umbrella! Needed for our stay since rained most of the weekend. Grange restaurant was very nice.

During our stay, became ill and staff was most helpful. dvd player in room was a nice addition. Corner room was great.

We flew into Sacramento on our way to a vacation in Yosemite. We wanted to visit with a friend in Sac and got a great deal on 3 nights (over the Labor Day holiday) at The Citizen. What a treat! It has a great downtown location, and the amenities are plush and lush. It was quiet, comfortable and has one of the best restaurants in Sacramento - and pretty damn good for anywhere.

The room was not large, but the bed and linens were top notch. And it was QUIET!!! The shower was hot and had lots of pressure - and good, comfy towels and robes. The only downside was the charge for wi-fi. Interesting that cheap hotels always seem to have free wi-fi - it's the expensive ones (or ones that cater to business travelers on expense accounts) that always charge.

The restaurant is really top rate - and we are serious foodies. The wine list is excellent and the staff all seem to know their stuff. They quietly attend to your needs before you even know you need them!
