Sutter House is perfectly located for walking to many attractions : Old Sacramento - less than a mile, Governors' mansion - about 6 blocks, State Capitol - 4 blocks, nice restaurants 2 - 3 blocks. It's in a neighborhood of older homes, some that are now bed and breakfasts. The structure itself is unusual. It has a square or rectangular "footprint", but the street level has a small square in the corner that is the lobby and the elevator to the rooms on the upper floors, the rest is parking. There are 2 floors of "rooms" around the outside of the building. The center on the second floor (which they call the first) has a nice open patio area with a good sized swimming pool. The third floor (which they call the second) is open to the sky and looks down on the pool/patio. They have a nice breakfast room and serve a nice breakfast. There are no hot foods other than self-serve waffles and oatmeal, but the options they have are very nice- hard cooked eggs, cereal, small bagels, sweet rolls and a bowl of fruit , also beverages. The rooms are large. Ours had a fridge but no freezer. The sheer drapes in the rooms are a printed fabric that is mostly cranberry colored so it makes the rooms a little dark unless you turn on the lights. The staff was friendly and helpful in selecting restaurants and giving us information on attractions. We thought it was a really nice place to stay and would definitely do so if we were ever in the area again.
