Reviewed 15 April 2010

I needed a hotel room in downtown Sacramento within walking distance to the State offices. This hotel is a little over a mile from the capital and a much better value than any other in the vicinity. The fact that it was so close to the old town area was a great bonus. I was able to get in fairly late and still walk over to a great place to eat for dinner. The hotel provides free shuttles to and from the airport making my travels extremely easy. Everyone who helped me was really nice and the room was clean.

I have arthritis and wanted something very close to old town. Cut through the parking ramp across the street and we were there. Our first visit to Sacremento was great. Room was clean and slept great. Service was wonderful. The breakfast was the best one we had on our vacation. Highly recommend.

I would agree with most of the reviews the location is great if you want to go to Old town or even mid town. It's got a mall nearby, so plenty of food and the walkway to the old town is just a quick walk. For price it's really good for a downtown capitol city. But as far as the hotel, you should know it's flanked by freeway overpasses on two sides, and has a Amtrak station within sight. I don't know if we just were unlucky, but it seemed like an awful lot of motorcycles were going by that night, too.

You can tell they redecorated the rooms, but you can tell it's an old hotel. The front desk staff were competent, but not especially memorable or friendly. The housekeeping staff were pretty nice, at least the lady I interacted with. Their continental breakfast is somewhat limited, but they did have the waffle machines, which were a great treat.

So I would say, price is good, but noise is an issue and perhaps safety as it's is very much a downtown area.

My wife and I spent the night here while on a trip to Old Sacramento on March 15th. Room rate was $79 + taxes for 2 queen beds. We arrived at the Vagabond at about 11 am. When I asked the front desk about leaving our car there until check in time we were offered an early check in. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel grounds were clean and well maintained. The room was clean and comfortable, but otherwise standard fare. Amenities included Cable TV/HBO, small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer, iron and board. There is a continental breakfast served in the morning which has the usual items: toast, pastries, cereal, waffles etc.
The property is located right next to a Denny's restaurant. Old Sacramento is about a block away. There is also a Westfield shopping mall a block or two away. The Capitol building is roughly a half mile away.
My only complaint was the noise. The walls are so thin, we could hear people talking in the pool, luggage rolling down the walkway and loud vehicles in the lot.
Overall I would recommend this hotel because of its affordability, friendliness of the staff and location.

We chose the Vagabond because of its location, price and reviews from this site. We were not disappointed. This is a great hotel for the price.

We called ahead and asked if we could check in early and they said no proble. When we arrived the rooms they had reserved for us adjacent to each other were not ready yet. They did find us other rooms close to gether and that was just fine. The counter personel were very nice and even gave us wonderful chocolate chip cookies! MMMMMM

Our rooms were clean and spacious. The bathtub had some wear and tear but nothing bad.

They actually triple sheet the beds!!!! What a nice surprise! I have stayed in rooms for $200 a night and not had that treat!!

The location is the best! One block from old town and K street mall! A really nice weekend getaway!

I will stay there again and again! Keep up the good work!

We wanted a cheap hotel to stay in to go to the Arco Arena and visit Old town. The location can not faulted it is a about 5 minutes walk from Old Town. The hotel is a bit shabby around the edges but given the cost you can not fault it. Denny's is next door and the waffles in the hotel are excellent.

We were travelling by train - the Vagabond is in an ideal location right opposite the Amtrak station and just a short walk from the superb railway museum and the sights of old Sacramento. They provide a decent free breakfast and there is a Denny's diner on site - or one block away there is the excellent River City Brewing Company in the K Street Mall with great beer and food.
There was a fridge in the room which was handy, too.
Downsides were the sound of the freight train horns which could be heard occasionally, but we couldn't hear the traffic to any great extent, even though there was a road right outside. And I agree with a previous comment about the steam powered computers in the 'business suite' - so slow!
One thing to watch out for is the extra $1.50 a night "Tourism Assessment Fee" which appeared on our bill in addition to the room charge, even though we had been quoted a price in advance. I don't know if this is particular to Sacramento or the Vagabond, but we weren't charged this anywhere else that we stayed in the USA.
