“Everything you want to know about Robert Louis Stevenson”
Reviewed 26 March 2013

We really liked this small (basically one large room) museum. It does a great job of presenting Robert Louis Stevenson's life and times. We were not really familiar with the author before the tour, but still enjoyed learning about his life and times.

“Certainly Worth a Visit”
Reviewed 18 April 2012

The Robert Louis Stevenson Silverado Museum in St. Helena, California is a must see for fans of the author of Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and so many other classics. That a writer from Scotland should be honored in this small (and exceptionally friendly) town seems surprising unless one knows that Stevenson and his American wife honeymooned in the area in 1880. Included in the collection are many of Stevenson's personal items, including his lead soldiers from childhood, his chess set, and pocketwatch. Original letters written in his own hand are on display, and there are many works of art and photographs that chronical the whole of Stevenson's life. No admission is charged, but donations are accepted.

“Beautiful museum, but keep your head down!”
Reviewed 10 February 2010

Recommended to visit before you hit the wineries, as there is a lot of interesting information, beautiful personal photographs and stories to learn about Robert Louis Stevenson (RLS). The beauty and uniqueness of the collection is in the fact that it takes the term "bibliophile" to a whole new level. Norman H. Strouse, collector and founder of the museum bequeathed many first editions and personal belongings of RLS. From his desk, to his bookshelves, to a mirror which hung in his home, this beautiful collection will connect you to one of the world's most fascinating and well-traveled authors in history. A word of caution: Do not speak to the curators unless you know nothing about RLS! They don't take well to tourists who point out that the Scotsman was only in California for less than a year, and will bite your head off for it. The funny thing is, they won't berate children for touching, leaning on, or otherwise leaving their mark on the exhibitions. Go now while it's still in good condition!
