Owner description: Take a Walk on the Wild Side! Visit Monterey Zoo and see a collection of over 100 animals as this zoo is fast becoming a premier Monterey Attraction. Currently under construction but still open daily for all to see the progress and hopefully help support this special effort to improve the quality of life for the animals and the community that enjoys them.

If you enjoy looking at wild animals being kept in dog kennels then this is the place for you! The "tour" was a meandering walk through chain link cages, housing some of the worlds most exotic and majestic animals (lions, baboons, kangaroos, bears, hyenas, leopards, tigers) with no grass, trees or natural shade to speak of. To be fair the elephants were not in small cages, and did have several acres to walk around.
The organization of the entire staff was chaotic, none of the guests knew what was actually going on as their were no instructions at the ticket counter. Once the tour started the amateur guide fumbled through her narrative dodging questions about the living conditions of the animals on display, frequently forgetting what she was talking about, and simply walking by half the animals in the "park" with no discussion of what they were.
Both my wife and I felt ripped off and embarrassed to have paid to see animals exploited in such a way; while at the same time, happy knowing that our 2 year old will not remember what he saw.

Wild Things is a small zoo, now called the Monterey Zoo, that houses a variety of different wild animals, the most majestic of which is a beautiful male lion

The tours (which start daily at 1pm and cost $10) through this well maintained, nicely lanscaped facility run about an hour.

They are led by one of the animal trainers and are educational and a lot of fun because you are close to the animals - probably the reason that they offer only guided tours(and why you have to stay with your group.)

They offer all kinds of special tours and events. Great place for young and odl.

Pay the extra $5 and have a "Meet & Greet" with the elephants at the end and you'll get to feed them carrots.

All the animals are stars but the 3 above know it!! They are darling and the tour is informative if you are lucky enough to get Fred or Amber. Also don't miss feeding the elephants at the end.. How often would you get to do that for 5.00???

This place is great fun. It's a small property with lots of great animals to see. They give a tour at 1pm each day. The tour lasts about an hour. You can pay an additional fee to hand feed the elephants at the end of the tour and I would highly recommend it. They are in the process of expanding the property and becoming an actual zoo.

The animals are very well cared for and some are extremely friendly. The owners take great pride in their refuge and enjoy sharing it with school groups, families and visitors.
They put on various events and the overnight stay is a wonderful close up experience.
Do take children there, where it is not a zoo atmosphere, but rather a refuge for wild
animals to learn about and see up close.
