What a rookie error for a seasoned traveler. We arrived on a Monday and found the site closed. Be sure to check days and hours, since they are limited, especially during the week. We could see the beautiful court yard gardens through the gateand the casa itself from the San Clemente pier below. It is obvious to see it was a very nice, rare piece of So. Cal history to see. We will not make the same mistake again!

We were going to the San Clemente pier restaurant for lunch and looked up other things to do. We have often seen the big home on the hill on previous visit is to the pier and wondered who lived there. We found out, was very nice with spectacular views. Was worth seeing a restored home from the very beginning of San Clemente. Worth a visit for the home and especially the views.

Hidden amongst the apartment laden neighborhood is this authentic piece of San Clemente history that offers a glimpse into what the area was like in the 1920s. Well worth a visit a visit for the history and the views. Parking is very and convenient and the staff/volunteers are very friendly and helpful.

My wife and I went to San Clemente from San Diego for our anniversary. We made this our first stop into town, which was a perfect choice. We got some history on San Clemente and it's "founder" Ole Hanson, while enjoying some amazing views of the area. Really glad we made this our first stop and love San Clemente for a couples getaway.

Casa Romantica was the vacation home of San Clemente founder and visionary Ole Hansen. It would be worth the visit just for the beautiful location on a bluff overlooking the San Clemente pier and beach. There are newly planted gardens sloping down from the house with benches and amphitheatre seating to enjoy the panoramic ocean views. In addition to the views, the home is a small but informative museum not only about the history of San Clemente and the life of Ole Hansen and his family and businesses but other Southern California history, too. It's not a typical historic house with original furnishings since it contains only only Ole Hansen's desk, and is sparsely furnished with other period pieces since the space is used for weddings and special events. The focus is on the preserved architecture--the Octagon room, the original redwood ceilings, the keyhole entrance door, the original tile floors, and open to the air layout to name a few. Anyone interested in Southern California history can learn a lot from several detailed displays of old photographs and newspaper pages, not only on the founding and design of San Clemente, but also about the development of San Juan Capistrano, Huntington Beach, Venice Beach, and Los Angeles, along with the history of surfing and of the original inhabitants. The holiday decorations in progress when we were there would make a visit extra special. Before you go, check the website for open days and times, as well as special events. $5 entrance fee; they accept credit cards.
