My family stopped here on our way to San Francisco and it was delicious. The Gyro was okay but I would suggest you get the Falafel because it was head and shoulders above the Gyro.

Green falafel, that;s their secret, and they wont tell why its green but it's sure delicious. Was introduced by friends when we were young and been going back for years. It's a San Jose landmark, and old drive in that was brought back to life decades ago. It's worth the drive from anywhere in Silicon Valley. Ask for extra white and red sauce and get lotsa napkins.... Best deal is the falafel in pita with banana milk shake, made with real ice cream and real bananas. Service can be a little snarly, but that's part of the deal. Not cheap but not too expensive....

My daughter introduced me to this restaurant three years ago because falafel is my favorite food. After this experience, I have not gone to any other place for falafel. Nothing can compare to the taste, authenticity and large serving of the dish. It makes me want to bring candles and nice table cloth to savor the meal.

This San Jose institution of a drive-in offers consistently excellent falafel worth waiting in the ubiquitous lines! You can eat there, or enjoy your falafel in the Rose Garden, not too far away.

The name of the place is sort of deceiving since it is technically not a "drive in". You'll have to park your car and walk up to the window to place your order. No worries, though, since there's plenty of parking on premises and along the streets.

The restaurant has been at this location for a long time and the building is sort of showing its age. Inside dining is very limited and outside dining is almost communal in nature. In recent years, the owners have painted the building, installed covering to protect outside diners from the elements, and heaters to keep patrons warm in winter. Nonetheless, this would never be a place for "fine dining" and it makes no pretentions of being so.

As you walk up to place your order, don't be deceived by the long lines which are common - particularly during lunch. The long lines are a testament to the good food you'll find and the length of the line correlates to how quickly those in front of you can make their menu selections and pay for their order. Falafel Drive-In has really efficient processes. As such, once you place your order, you will find that the wait is short to actually receive your food.

The food is fairly priced for the quality and quantity received. I usually get the large falafel that's stuffed with cucumbers, lettuce, sauce, and a fair number of falafel balls. They also offer a combo in which a small falafel is combined with a banana milkshake. This will save you fifty cents on the tab. However, they will also make a chocolate-banana milkshake that, in my opinion, is more tasty. Although it's not part of the combo deal, it's worth the extra cost.

I have tried several other items on their menu and have never been disappointed. Another favorite of mine is the gyro. At Falafel Drive-In, the gyro is sauced with tahini - which I prefer - rather than the more typical tzatziki sauce. The pita chips are pretty good. However, if you are on a low fat diet, keep in mind that these are fried and on the greasy side.

Overall, you can't go wrong if you are looking for fast food that isn't the standard fare of hamburgers, hot dogs, or tacos. After many years of being in business, they've got the formula figured out for serving good food quickly that's fairly priced. That's probably why the lines are so long out front. On the other hand, if there was an opportunity for improvement, it would be that they start accepting credit cards and/or not charge a fee for using a debit card.
