“Utter Excellence”
Reviewed 4 April 2013

This is a new restaurant in San Jose and what can I say but it is utter excellence!!

The decor is stunning, with exposed old San Jose brickwork juxtaposed with new wood and discrete fittings. It is clean. modern and well lit. The grill and kitchen area are open and it's possible to see how a good team can make a restaurant work.

Service is second to none - we even had the manager searching for a Greek bottled beer for us (which he found and presented to us) - dishes can be modified to account for diets/preferences.

The food however is sublime; varied, fresh and superbly presented. I haven't had Greek food this good since seated on a restaurant roof in Athens !!

I'm looking forward to going back

“Nouveau Greek Cuisine in Downtown San Jose”
Reviewed 16 March 2013

My wife and I ate dinner at the newly opened Nemea (neh-meh-ah) Taverna earlier this week. It serves Greek cuisine and had been open all of one week. It's located on 1st and San Fernando where the old E&O Trading Co restaurant was located until about a year ago. This is neither a Greek diner nor a tavern. It's a high-end, Greek-themed restaurant with great food.

Bottom line: The food and service were excellent and we have a new winner in downtown San Jose. My wife had a dorade (fish) and vegetable entree and I had a lamb shank on risotto with a side order of asparagus. We both loved both of our dishes. The lamb fell off the bone.

The decor is high-end and nicely done with Greek statuettes, battered stone, and medium-dark wood accents and floors. The service is attentive and the setting is semi formal with white cloth tablecloths and white-jacketed wait staff. Very nice ambiance.

Dress code is California whatever. I saw one male adult leaving in parachute-style knee shorts and a Thundercats t-shirt. One female patron was wearing Daisy Maes (or Daisy Dukes if you're not old enough to remember Li'l Abner). Other couples had dressed up for the occasion. Sound level is on the high side of moderate, about average for most restaurants these days.

Entree prices ranged from high teens to low thirties. There's an extensive wine list that we didn't use and a separate dessert list that we didn't see. Our tab was $58 plus tip for a 2-entree dinner. We didn't drink alcohol, didn't order appetizers (they look good though and we forgot to order some tzatziki) or salads and didn't order dessert. That turned out to be a good thing because the entrees are ample. Expect a tab of at least $100 or so per couple if you imbibe and have a salad or dessert.

We made a reservation that night for a return visit. Recommended.
