This is a nice trendy Micro Brew/dining joint with a spin for organic food and sports bar.

Location: Great. Right at the head of San Jose's trendy nightlife area...San Pedro Square

Food: Decent. Most items are organic and range of healthy items and your pub grub like burgers. Nothing amazingly special, but good value. Great selection of drinks with the open bar area right in the middle of the place.

Atmosphere: Very lively due to the sport bar TVs around and massive bar.

Service: Average. Our waiter was barely visible but seemed like other wait staff were attentive.

Value: Average prices ($20 mains) what you would expect to pay in the Bay area.

Occasions:

In summary great meet up place for drinks in a more trendier scene for San Jose. Decent food options if you wanted to rollup dinner as well. Good for dates, but not for families given the noise with the bar scene.

We enjoyed our meal and beer at the Farmers Union. The service was fine - maybe picked up since the last reviews. The food was fantastic! The fries can't be beat! Great sliders also. There were plenty of big screens to watch your favorite team (go 9ers!) We will definitely go there again...Thanks Farmers Union for a good time.

The food was decent, but the beer selection and the atmosphere was great. The service was slow, but the place wasn't that busy...we couldn't understand it...oh well.

A new place in downtown San Jose, it looked really promising. There are tons of beers on tap, the bar section is rather large, with lots of tv's. I think they are waiting for the San Jose Sharks fans to come in before and after games, since it is right at San Pedro (blocks away from "The Tank").
The food was pretty good and decent, just like the beer taps. But the service was poor. Our server didn't know when to stop by and when not to, it was weird. Plus it was extremely slow, Sunday night, but it was like she was not to be found at times. I have a feeling that our food sat under the heat lamp for awhile before anyone thought about looking at the ticket. The section behind us had a great server, she was constantly checking on them and getting what her tables needed. Oh well, maybe it is just growing pains...new servers, new restaurant, etc.

The location was a Sizzler for a long time, then vacant for a long time, then Spiedo for a while, then vacant again for a few years. Now it's Farmers Union, a tribute to its original use long ago. The McEnery Family (former SJ Mayor) owns virtually the entire square block known as San Pedro Square, a multiple bar & restaurant area heavily populated with diners and drinkers when the Sharks play, or when any other event is held at what is now called The SAP Center at San Jose. Most locals still call it The Shark Tank.

The restaurant has been open just a few weeks, so it still needs quite a bit of work. One thing that needs a lot of work is what they call a rotisserie half chicken. When it was served, there was no evidence it had ever been inside a rotisserie. It looked more baked. The skin was not crisp; indeed it was wet and slimy. It was a small breast and small thigh; not really a half chicken. It came with a gazillion dried out Yukon Gold potatoes that they called herbed potatoes, and some asparagus.

Eight wines by the glass are offered--four whites and four reds, all on tap. They are served in a small stemless glass, with a stingy five ounce pour that looks small even in the small glass. The wine by the bottle list is short, with prices much higher than the food offerings would warrant; but this is primarily a beer drinkers' place. Lots of beers on tap. Lots of flat screens, and a HUGE projection screen that was off at lunch.

Lots of cute young women serving food at the tables. The lunch bartender has had eight jobs in six years. What does that tell you?

I'll try it again in a couple of months to see if they have improved. For now though, I'm sure it has a niche. After all, mediocrity appeals to a much larger demographic than fine dining.
