Back in 1933 Brook Hart--son of a wealthy local merchant--was kidnapped and killed. When the alleged perpetrators were caught, the outraged public stormed the jail, dragged them to St. James Park, stripped them naked, and hung them both. An enterprising person took photos of them swinging from the tree and made postcards of it, which sold locally for many years.

It's across the street from what once was SJ's Main Post Office; as well as the original Superior Court Building. There are many historic buildings surrounding the park. The VTA lightrail has stops on both sides of the park.

It was the last place Bobby Kennedy spoke before he was shot in L.A.

As you enter the park, you see signs proclaiming it to be a drug free zone. What irony! It is one of the hottest areas for purchasing drugs in all of San Jose. It's also a camping grounds for many homeless people and their dogs, some of them pitbulls. The SJ Downtown Assoc. has held summer concerts there for a few years, displacing the druggies and homeless for a day. Then they return. It’s their park, man. Many neighborhood parents are afraid to let their kids play there. There was a Senior Center there, but it was demolished several years back. Several attempts to "take back the park" from the drug dealers and derelicts have failed.

I grew up in San Jose and while looking over the list, I could not believe St. James park was listed. We drove by everyday on the bus and there were always at least 20 homeless people laying about as well as some people I normally would cross the street if I came across. I would NOT bring my children here nor would I as a tourist even come close. This is a poor example of the "best" of San Jose. Kind of makes you think they ran out of sites to list and started scraping the bottom of the barrel...

If you like to hang with the homeless, drug users, and rebellious teens then this park is for you. Use to spend time there to feed the poor etc but did not like this for a park outing or a family place.

It is a nice enough park, except for the homeless who stay there. If I had young children, I would not go there.

This is not a park i'd usually want to just hang out at do to the people that usually reside here but have been to several music event's that have been held here (the last being the '11 Blues Festival). On these occations, i'd recommend taking the Light Rail which stop's right along side the park.
