“Great location in downtown SJ”
Reviewed 28 February 2014

This hotel is perfectly located for business travel to the San Jose area. It is within walking distance of the convention center and all of downtown amenities. The rooms are pretty comfortable and spacious, the gym is nicer than average (although they could use some mirrors or screens in front of the treadmills). Minus one point for not having free wifi for guests staying at the hotel, and for the inconvenience of having to re-apply for wifi access every day (Seriously Fairmont: These days it is more important for business travel to have free wifi than cable tv in the room).

This is not the hotel I normally use when visiting San Jose, but the person making the reservations for my accommodation is fond of the Fairmont.

The good bits - check-in was easy, the bed comfortable, the televisions in the hotel lounge were evenly placed and allowed me to watch the basketball game easily, the food and drinks in the lounge were quite good, and the television channel line-up card was complete and accurate.

The bad bits, in the order in which I experienced them - the music in the hotel lounge was far too loud - in fact it was uncomfortably so, there were no instructions commonly found in other hotels - like hanging up the towels - that help customers improve the ecological impact of their stay, the recent renovation left the shower head loose on the arm and incapable of maintaining position, some common comforts (like facial tissues) were not present in the room, there is no 'do not disturb' sign for the door, and, most disturbingly, I had to kill a very large American cockroach that wandered into my room on the 3rd floor.

This hotel is not anywhere close to my usual standard, and I doubt I will be returning.

Stayed 2 separate times this year for business and both stays rooms are nice average hotel rooms but hotel overall is really nice. On one stay we used a room and connecting suite. The suite is not very big, no kitchen area or big conference table (just small table) but there is a wet bar. We asked for small refrigerator to be brought up and staff was very accommodating. Hotel also has a spa (which was just ok) and business/FedEx center, and Concierge will help you with boarding passes but many times there wasn't an attendant at that desk. The hotel is in a great location in San Jose. Easy walk to many restaurants and the convention center. We held 2 functions in hotel property, a small reception pool side, and a large event in ballroom. Food was terrific and very attentive service. The pool is lovely. Had small problem with a charge on our room bill and they were very helpful and immediately took discrepancy off the total. Lobby bar is very convenient for meeting other guests and easy access before going up to rooms. Liked the bar and restaurant attached to the hotel as well. Parking garage is not run by the hotel so you will not get any price break there. The Fairmont is clearly the nicest large hotel property in San Jose.

Room Tip: Staying in main part of hotel and not the towers is more convenient.

The Fairmont San Jose is a great choice if you in business at the Silicon Valley.
Excellent service (great staff!) and facilities, great location in San Jose.
Located near to restaurants in the center of the city.
Comfortable and classy rooms, restaurants and bars.
Gym is ok for a few days (and free). with state-of-the art equiment. It is a bit small, so don't expect to train here for the Olympics.
Would stay there next time I am back to the Silicon Valley.

We're just home from a fantastic 3-day weekend at this marvelous property. We're very picky about hotels and this was a 5-star stay. We booked an Executive Suite on the 20th floor and it was HUGE with a king bed, chaise, sofa, large bathroom with tub and separate shower, bar area and walk-in closet. What made the room were 3 enormous arched windows that provided a beautiful view of downtown and planes landing at the San Jose Airport. The linens and finishings were elegant and it reminded me of a fine NYC hotel back in the day….understated and elegant.

The service at the hotel was terrific as was the food. We checked out local restaurants on Chowhound and that led us right to The Grill in the hotel - a superb steakhouse in the style of Smith & Wollensky (NYC) and The Palm, but with much friendlier service. Still thinking about their sourdough bread. :) Breakfast in their more casual restaurant was great, too.

And you're righting the center of town with the fine arts museum, the cathedral and the Tech Museum within sight of the hotel. Nothing but kudos for this property. We'll surely be back.

Room Tip: We were in room 2002 which was huge and awesome. Bigger than my first apartment!

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon. There were both good and bad points, but to me the most important thing in a hotel is cleanliness, and this was the cleanest place I've ever stayed by far.

The hotel seemed quiet and relaxed during the week, but over Valentine's weekend it was absolutely packed. Trying to cut through the lobby was like shoving your way through a crowded dance floor at a night club. People didn't care if they were in your way or blocking walking traffic, so it was annoying. And over the weekend was the only time I heard any hallway noise from my room, as well. I did hear a couple children running around, carrying on in the middle of the night on Friday or Saturday night. But before and after the weekend, it was quite peaceful.

Aside from the cleanliness and relative quiet, the hotel is in a great location. There's a light train/bus station right behind it so you can get around to some interesting places for cheap. For just $6 each a day, we had all-day transportation passes to visit Korea Town, Japan Town, and the Winchester Mystery House. There are both expensive and cheap places to eat all around, from fancy bistros to Subway and from a 50s diner to McDonald's. And, you can't forget Starbucks! And those are all within a block of the hotel.

There was live music every night in the lobby. A few times there were full bands (we're talking jazz, not rock'n roll) and sometimes just a pianist, and people dancing. That wasn't something I'd seen before. The staff was friendly. They'll call you a cab any time, and even after you check out, they will hold your luggage for as long as you need without charge. We dropped off our luggage in the AM with bell service and picked it up around 7 PM in time to head to the airport to catch a redeye.

But it wasn't all great. In case you're unused to staying at fancy locales, as we are, you should know that the amenities in the room are awful and anything you want that typically comes standard in even the cheapest of rooms will cost extra. For example, there was a refrigerator in the room, but it came pre-stocked. If you put your own items in the fridge, they will charge you. If you take anything out of the fridge, even if you don't use it, they will charge you. There was a bottle of wine, two glasses, and a package of trail mix sitting on the dresser. They are on motion sensors. If you move them, just to look, they will charge you. The trail mix had a $15 price tag. My wife added it all up, and if you were to pick up and examine each item, or even accidentally bump the dresser and knock things down, it would cost you $65 just to set those things down.

Also, there was no microwave. So we ended up wasting a lot of food and going without drinks because we couldn't refrigerate anything without paying to have an extra fridge brought to our room. That's ludicrous.

Wi-fi was very expensive, so we just did without internet for the week and a half we were there. We also got horrible cell phone reception, even standing next to the window. Another reviewer mentioned that you can sign up for something to get free wi-fi, so you might want to look into that. I wish we'd known! I think my wife said it was like $13 a day or something crazy.

The bathroom was a little dated, as someone mentioned. The water pressure was horrible. My wife has long hair, and it would take10 minutes just to get it damp under the poor trickle of a shower stream we could get going. And the head of the shower kept turning itself and wanting to pour into the corner where you can't even stand. The tub basin was also extremely slippery. But the in-house shampoo/soaps they provide smell like heaven. Very nice quality. I'm surprised we weren't charged for them!

One day a maid threw away my shoe box. I had to bring my good dress shoes home in a plastic garbage bag inside my suitcase. That really irked me. It was nowhere near the garbage can, so she would have had to pick it up and look inside to see whether or not the shoes were there. Another day a maid moved our toothbrushes. I didn't appreciate that, either.

My biggest beef, however, is with Tova Day Spa. Talk about a rip-off. If their "stylist" has ever been to beauty school, I'm a monkey's uncle. Don't waste your money on the salon. My wife walked out saying she could have done the same thing herself and not spent $100 to have someone essentially brush her hair and send her out the door. Yikes.

Room Tip: Don't touch the goods on the motion sensors, even if you're curious! lol

We have stayed at this Hotel many times over the past twenty years. Well, nothing has changed since. Still very clean. Highly responsive service. There was a very good band in the lobby area on Friday evening. The drinks very expensive, but the atmosphere was great.
The Grill restaurant attached to the Hotel was not too busy. The meals were great, service was friendly, but quite expensive.
The rooms are dated, clean, but most of all the bathroom needs a renovation.
