It's in a former Carnegie Library (like Paso Robles). It's well laid out, and the exhibits are relevant, interesting, and very well cared for; the docent was well-versed on local history and interesting to talk with.

The exhibit on the Dallidet family was excellent, but I would have hoped for a little more coverage of local history in general, not just the "main show" exhibit. Still, it's well presented and quite interesting. A great departure from the funky old collection of everything from delivery wagons to sewing implements that was how it was haphazardly presented in the 1970s. It's free ($2/person donation encouraged) and a volunteer effort, so it's good value.

Good collection of books on county history in general, in the gift shop. I had to limit myself, as there were a lot of interesting volumes on SLO County interest. Definitely worth a stop.

A small museum with a changing exhibit. The exhibit we saw was very interesting and informative. Staff was very helpful.
Wheelchair accessible through back and elevator.
For research one should make an appointment.

History Center 696 Monterey ST, 805-543-0638. Open 10-4. The building was formerly a Carnegie City Museum. This tiny museum offers revolving exhibits. At the time of our visit, the main coverage was the history of the Dallidet Family, credited with starting the first commercial winery in SLO. Toilets available downstairs. Parking lot with meters. Walk across the street to a park with additional toilets. The park is also the access down to the river.

Located in a former Carnegie Library building adjacent to the mission, space here is quite limited but is used very effectively. The exhibits are eye-catching, informative and professionally mounted. The research room downstairs is open on a limited basis. I got a friendly welcome and the help I needed during a family history research visit.
