The bakery features artisan breads, pastries & desserts baked fresh daily. Each item from the bakery is carefully created and guaranteed to delight your senses. The café has a larger selection of salads and specialty sandwiches as well as signature ‘sun pizzas’! “Good food, good prices.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 June 2014

We arrived in the afternoon and we were happy to find that Splash had its own parking lot. The restaurant is rather small and was very full, but has a nice, lively vibe to it. I noticed immediately that the baked good's case was rather empty (a good sign!) We secured a table after about 5 minutes and when we went to order the lady quickly offered us a taste of their famous clam chowder (it was pretty good). (You order at the counter but they bring the food to your table.) We ordered the chili, a veggie burger, curly fries, pepperoni pizza and a turkey and cheese sandwich. The veggie burger was a black bean burger (which I liked), but I noticed they also offer a Gardenburger on the menu so you need to be aware that there are these two different choices when ordering veggie burgers. My son loved the turkey sandwich and the sun-shaped pizza appeared to be on a homemade crust which my daughter enjoyed. The curly fries are good and one order is enough for two people. My husband did not like the chili at all. We then ordered desserts (they looked so yummy!) I had the dark chocolate coated marshmallow which was good and a good portion for the price. My son had the red velvet cupcake which he enjoyed. My daughter had the lemon bar which looked good but had an odd smell and she did not like the flavor at all. I asked for gluten-free products and they said they do have gluten-free muffins in the morning but were out of them. I would definitely recommend this place for an economical meal, especially for a family with smaller children. I would love to go back earlier in the day to try out more of their pastries. From the looks of the empty cases in the latter part of the day I would say that they must be yummy!

“It Makes a Big Splash!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014

Splash is our neighborhood go-to when we're in a hurry or need a great loaf of freshly baked bread.

Their big loaves of pesto-parmesan or tomato basil bread are perfect for big dinner parties. They're huge and tasty and look homemade. Yah, take the credit for it.

Every Friday they bake Challah, which is perfect for Sunday's french toast.

Their pastries and baked good cases are filled with delectable and gorgeous treats. At 7 P.M. all the pastries in the left hand case are only 1.00 each. Wow, great bargains.

All of their hot dogs, sandwiches etc. are good, but not memorable. What they're famous for is their clam chowder, but I am ambivalent about it. Sometimes it feels waaaaay too thick, but people love it, especially when it is served in a sour dough bread bowl (carbohydrate overload anyone?).

Lines of customers commonly stream out the doors and onto the patios, but it is usually worth the wait. You can eat outdoors on side patios (quite small), or indoors at fast-food type booths.

The owners of this restaurant are community minded and generous. You can find another Splash Cafe in downtown San Luis Obispo between Marsh St. and Higuera (right by the Barnes and Noble), and the mother ship is in Pismo.

These restaurants are always busy and are fantastically successful. There must be lots of reasons for that.

“A Big Splash at Splash Cafe”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2014

Stopped in here on our way to downtown San Luis Obispo. This cafe has three three locations,of which the original was started in Pismo Beach, 10 miles to the southwest. Decor is that of a beach hut - very upbeat and whimsical sea theme. It serves BLD and is mostly operated by college students (large "college fund" jar on the counter...the entire town runs on college help, but it's got a nice vibe of youth and sophistication without being snobby nor aloof).

We each ordered a veggie burrito - very generous serving for $3.95 each. Had lots of veggies and potatoes in it - but they were 'tater tots', so had a bit of a crunch. This was served with some spicy salsa. The coffee is strategically just past the baked goods just to get your mouth watering from viewing all of the baked goods. One can view the bakers baking away in this open concept cafe.

Wine is also served but wi-fi is not (this too, seemed to be a common occurrence (the lack of wi-fi, I mean, although there was an abundance of happy hour and penny pints being advertised quite a bit). We presumed that most cafes assumed the majority of customers had a data plan or they did not wish to encourage 'studying' at their locations for long periods of time and so did not offer complimentary wi-fi).

We came back for a snack and shared a tuna sandwich which was plenty for two ($.595). Another morning we shared oatmeal (large serving) that was $4.50 and came with nuts, raisins and brown sugar and a scrambled egg sandwich which was $3.25). Coffee was one of two sizes medium or large (at least 20oz). We (obviously) ate here a lot because it was inexpensive and on our way to downtown and the servers were lively and fun. They are known for their seafood, but we have yet to try it as it is for mostly breakfast that we are stopping in there.

“Great latte and delicious muffin”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

After reading all the great reviews, I had to try Splash (plus it was only a few blocks from where I was staying). I ordered a medium sized cafe latte for $2.75 (great price for the size and quality) and triple berry muffin and sat down to enjoy both. The crumb topping on the muffin was perfect. There were lots of people in the bakery enjoying their breakfasts and there was a good vibe about the place.
