“Never Stay Here Again”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2012

We always stay at Marriott's but after this visit we have changed our tune. We were in town to visit Hearst Castle and Paso Robles Wineries. After touring downtown San Luis Obispo for the day we returned to the Hotel after our dinner. Husband wanted to watch the News and Jay Leno. We immediately got a phone call from the Front Desk that we needed to turn our TV Down...it was too loud. In 35 years of staying in Hotels we have NEVER had a complaint from anyone for anything. In fact, I am able to fall asleep with the TV on because it is never too loud. Husband woke at 5 AM and wanted to catch the Stock Channel....immediately within 10 minutes we got another phone call telling us to turn the TV Down. The Manager never bothered to come to our room to see if the TV was up too high.........just made us feel uncomfortable. The next day we toured Hearst Castle and after Dinner returned to our room and turned the TV on around 10 PM. Sure enough.............we got a call. We were going to stay 5 nights but the next morning we went to the front desk and told them we were checking out. I explained why and the Front Desk Manager said she would come and talk to me while we were packing. She never did and we left. We are Marriott Members and my Husband and his Company uses Marriott on a weekly basis all across the Country. But we are looking into changing our Membership to another Hotel Chain. Management didn't bother to be concerned about our stay. We obviously had someone staying above or next to us that was very slimy and just wanted to complain for the sake of complaining. We moved Hotels to an Ocean Front and never had any complaints about our TV Time either. It's nice to have choices!!

Room Tip: Don't Stay Here. Walls must be "paper thin" Management will call you when you have t...

Stayed there overnight on the first night our California Road-trip (San Francisco to San Diego).
Plenty of free parking outside the hotel. Check-in was fast and effective and the staff friendly. The two rooms we had were clean, large and had all the furnishings one would expect at a Marriott Courtyard hotel. We had an excellent night’s sleep and had no issues with noise, smell or lights (as I see mentioned in other reviews).

I second the warning about breakfast: It’s not clear whether it’s free or not and we were hit with an unexpected breakfast charge. We stayed in several Marriott hotels on our USA vacation and this was the only one we were charged. A sign before entering the breakfast area would be in order. For that I'm dropping one point off in value and service.

The ultimate question is whether one would stay there again. Yes – definitely. San Luis Obispo is a great layover point if driving from SF to LA and we came well rested from our stay.

We really liked this place in so many ways. The rooms were spacious and nice, and were nicely appointed with new furniture. However, the furniture smelled! We had read the other reviews mentioning a moldy odor, as well as the manager response that the smell was coming in from outside. But we changed rooms a couple of times due to the odor, and we sniffed every square inch before determining that the smell was coming from the new furniture (particularly the headboards). We don't know if it was due to the furniture materials or the cleaning agents, but it drove us crazy. Maybe the smell will wear down over time ...

Thank you so much for posting on Trip Advisor in regards to your stay with us. Your comments are greatly appreciated. I have read your thoughts about our furniture having an odor and passed the information on to our Maintenance Supervisor. He is looking into it immediately to see if there is a connection. We have had environmental services out to test the air quality of our rooms to ensure that there are no chemicals present. All findings have come back negative. Any treatment to our furniture would have likely shown up on those tests as it is the same furniture that we opened with 4 1/2 years ago. We will still investigate to be 100% sure it is not the furniture.

Once again your helpful hints are appreciated. We hope to see you again on any future trip to our area.

Sincerely,

Lindsey Ridgeway - General Manager

The room is well equipped. The hotel is nicely placed, has pretty grounds and the staff so far has been nice. Great view from the west side of the property.

I do like the Paul Mitchell conditioner, thanks for that. Shower was hot, water pressure so-so.

There are lots of pillows, the bed is NOT all that comfortable. It's one of those thin, cardboardy matresses.

There are LOTS of easy to find outlets. That's seriously cool.

The wifi is medium speed. Room has coffee pot, bar fridge and microwave.

What I don't appreciate is the lack of light. What I wouldn't give for a bright lamp and less eye strain. Instead there are 3 lamps and 4 LEDs. It's seriously hard to read, work on my laptop...What I wouldn't give for a whole bunch of lumens....

Room Tip: West side of property. Best views, no noise.

I want to thank you for sharing your comments regarding our property. We appreciate all feedback and yours was quite helpful. I was glad to read that you noticed our new Paul Mitchell amenities. We felt it necessary to upgrade our complimentary items so your acknowledgement was nice to receive. I apologize that our lighting in the rooms was not sufficient during your stay. I know this must have been frustrating for you. I am going to look into this with my Maintenance Supervisor to see what we can do to improve upon this issue. I hope upon your return to our hotel that we have remedied the situation and you continue to be a loyal Marriott customer.

Thank you,

Lindsey Ridgeway - General Manager

We arrived here late afternoon (having driven down from San Francisco on Scenic Hwy 1) and check in was quick and easy. We had two rooms (325 and 327), both with 2 queen beds, microwave and fridge and views of nothing in particular.
As an extra bonus, room 325 was directly opposite the second elevator - at least it wasn't the most commonly used elevator, but you could certainly hear it.
The hotel has a gym (which I didn't use, but it looked clean) and coin laundry facilities.
The breakfast buffet was lovely - porridge, toast, fruit and yoghurt in the basic buffet, for a little extra you could have scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, waffles and made-to-order eggs/omlettes. The staff on duty were absolutely delightful - as first time visitors to the area, we got some great tips on places to visit near Hearst Castle (our main reason for visiting).
I enjoyed our stay at the Courtyard by Mariott and would stay here again to break up the long drive.

The Courtyard was a nice place to stay when it first opened, but little has been done in the past 2-3 years. The main facilities are well maintained, but the amenities in the rooms are declining in quality. The towels are getting thin, the soap/shampoo are lower quality and the bedding is very light in a climate that is quite cool in the winter. Sadly, this seems to be the trend at most Courtyard hotels, so the SLO facility is not much different. What is most disappointing is the room rate. The $179/night rate on a weekend is what you'll pay for a four-star hotel in the SLO area, but the quality isn't there for this hotel. A new Hampton Inn is going in across the street and perhaps it will create some better competition. There aren't a lot of major chains to choose in SLO.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are the quietest.

What a disappointment, uncomfortable beds, a glowing clock and really noisy a/c contributed to make this the worst nights stay we have ever had in any hotel. The reception appeared to be run by young girls who lacked empathy and did the minimum required. At checkout we weren't even asked if we had had a comfortable stay toatlly disinterested!!.Hotel in the middle of nowhere along with some other hotels about 3 miles out of SLO. Complained when we returned home but are still waiting for any reply!!(4 months have now passed)..

I am very sorry that your October stay was disappointing. It is our intent to provide the best customer service and it seems we did not meet that expectation. I was shocked to read that our desk staff seemed disinterested. We are constantly working on guest interaction as it is a large part of what makes a hotel successful. This is truly unfortunate and I want to assure you that I will meet with my front desk associates to make sure they are aware of your review. Moving forward we will take all of your comments and put them to good use. Thank you for being so candid and helping us become a better hotel.
