“Enjoyed my stay but not perfect....”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

I would say overall = good and wish, as somebody else said that I could give it 3and a half...

The positives....

Location - very central.
Cooked breakfast was lovely, once they recooked it...
Quaint building with history and character and lovely antique furnishings...
Friendly staff...
Loved the peanut butter cookies hanging from our door knob when we got back from dinner.
The journal on the ledge that anyone can write in - it was fun to read the comments from other guests from over the years...

The negatives...

I know there is a huge water shortage in the area, but when I saw the huge, free-standing bath tub, I was dying to have a soak; I bought natural bath products from a local store, and after dinner, I rushed back to have a bath, only to discover that there was no plug!
Also, Edelweiss room is quite dark, with no TV, and a very firm bed, which my mum loved, me not quite so much.

If you have luggage, there is a massive, very dramatic flight of stairs to climb, be warned!

It was very easy to hear your neighbors; we were jealous of their TV!

Most weird was the breakfast - when we checked in I told the front desk lady that my mum and I were allergic to garlic and onions; she replied, good to know....then at breakfast, we sat down in the breakfast area, helped ourselves to liquids - juice, coffee, water, tea etc and a cooked breakfast was brought out to us....it seemed odd that nobody asked what we wanted.

Anyway, along with the fried eggs/spinach/cheese, stuffed onto very fresh English muffin were onions!....Once we told them, they remade ours without onions and the Muffin concoction, along with the hash browns and fruit, was delicious!!!!

And not good or bad was the fact you could pay for/get validated for parking a block away since street parking is difficult in that central part of SLO...?$7 for parking if I recollect correctly....

Room Tip: Edelweiss is a bit dark, no tv, free-standing tub with no plug and a firm bed....up a huge flight of...

We booked this Inn, sight unseen, because of its location. We wanted to stay downtown San Luis as we explored the general area. The charming old building opened up to a grand staircase and welcoming living room and dining room. The young woman at the business desk, Bri, was very gracious and helpful. We had selected the Amadeus room on the second floor. The room was well appointed in a Victorian style and the bath was spacious. It had a claw foot tub with a shower curtain, so showers were easy. The location is just a block or two from the main street which is alive at night because San Luis is a college town. In fact, Thursday night is Farmer's Market night and a quick walk up the street led us to all the fun. The breakfast experience was wonderful. The beautiful and gracious and interesting young woman who served us, Lakin (not sure of the spelling) was captivating. She prepared tasty hot food and served it with style. She was both interesting and interested. She really enhanced our experience there. We liked it so much, that we decided to stay an extra night. The General Manager, John, put us in the Love room just off the living room for our third night. It was a wonderful. This Inn is truly a gem and may be the only place to stay right downtown. Just great!!

What a fabulous experience from start to finish. This is a great value for the full package & I'll definitely be back. Stayed in the Dollie McKeen Suite & it was "quaint" & comfortable. Historical charm & extremely convenient location. Slept with windows open & heard some late night locals, but it is the "downtown"/neighborhood border. 5 minute walking distance to two parks (to take the dog) & perfect for a nice dinner and stroll safely home.

This is a lovely old building in a perfect location to explore downtown SLO. We were able to get a room for one night on short notice. I like old buildings, and the common areas were very pretty, but my husband thought our room (Cocoon) needed some maintenance. He was reluctant to take a shower in the claw foot tub, which was peeling. We did enjoy the coffee, juice, and coffee cake, but thought the scrambled eggs could be better. I think some of the larger rooms with enclosed showers would be better for a longer visit.

We recently spent the weekend at the Garden Street Inn in San Luis. The Victorian house used to be an apartment building that was converted into a b and b. The inn offers many different room options. Ours had a separate sitting area with fire place. They do not offer afternoon wine and cheese like many other b and b's but you could not beat the super friendly staff, the lovely comfortable bed and the best location in San Luis. We walked to everything. They offer parking at a nearby secure parking facility and validate your parking pass. We were supposed to pay $7.50 a day to park, but they waved that at check in. The breakfast was not exceptional but made fresh and was a great way to start the day.

First the good. The check in desk is in the back to the left a bit out of view but we found it pretty quick. The staff were very friendly and check in was a breeze. The common areas are beautiful and well maintained in the classical Victorian style of the Inn. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. In the evening the inn keepers baked fresh chocolate chip cookies which were waiting for us in an individual baggy with ribbon hanging from our room door. Honestly the best chocolate chip cookie I've ever had. The location can't be beat. Literally there is no other hotel this close to Downtown San Luis Obispo (SLO). I recommend staying on a Thursday night to you can enjoy the Farmer's Market held one block away from the Inn. Breakfast was great and really filled us up. While I enjoyed my stay I have to say that if it weren't for the location I would have rated this B&B average.

I can't attest to the quality of all the rooms but I was a little disappointed in ours. The decor was nice and in keeping with the charm of the inn, but the fireplace and the bathroom were in need of attention. The fireplace, due to local ordinances, was inoperable. I think this affords them a great opportunity to update it with an electric "fireplace". The bathroom tub and shower was a great looking claw-foot tub, however; taking a shower in it was nearly impossible, it appeared as though a part was missing needed to hold the shower head in place. It required a balancing act of holding the spray head in one hand while ducking and scrubbing with the other hand. Great water pressure and temperature control though. Due to the limited parking in SLO you will have to park your car in the parking structure (one block away). Pull up in front of the Inn for check in and check out.

As a former resident of, and frequent traveler to the Central Coast, I will stay here again. The location means we get to go out and not worry about who is driving and still get to enjoy all of the nightlife that SLO has to offer. The service really was great too.

Room Tip: If you like taking showers pick any room other than the Edelweiss.

We stayed at this B&B on a recommendation from a restaurant we ate in and I'm really glad we did, , after staying in a string of mundane motels this was a real luxury, its a very well restored victorian house and as a sucker for the small personal touches that make a place special and homely I really appreciated the decor and attention to detail
We stayed in the Dolli Mckeen suite, it had a huge deep bath and an ornate fireplace, sofas and a really comfortable bed, the breakfast was lovely and the staff were really freindly and helpful,
I would definitely recommend staying here, if you like a bit of personality in your accomodation and you want to feel pampered without spending a fortune
