I booked this hotel via the internet and didn't know what to expect. From the courteous oung lady that checked me in to the attentive woman responsible for the free breakfast I found people that seemed to enjoy their job. That speaks highly (and loudly) for any business, but particularly for one in the hospitality business. The hotel itself was very clean and priced well for the product. I also found the location a plus. Access to the highlway and the fact that downtown and the university were literally within walking distance was a huge bonus for me. I recommend this hotel for the one night guest passing through the area as well as the guest wanting to spend a week or more exploring this wondeful part of the state.

This place is in a good location, right off the highway and a healthy walking distance to downtown. Our room, though near the elevator, was pretty quiet. The women at the front desk were friendly and competent (we were allowed to check into our room almost 3 hours early). Pluses include a decent selection of movie rentals to watch in your room and the room had an iPod docking station and DVD player, both of which were appreciated since it rained most of the weekend putting the kabosh on most of our plans. Our room also had a nice little patio up in the pinetrees which would have been nice to enjoy if the weather were better. They also had all- day complimentary coffee/drinks, afternoon tea (why not leave the tea bags out all day, is my question, however...) and a continental breakfast. If you are vegetarian, you'll do fine but vegans might have to work a little harder to find something to eat. I have to be honest however and say though it was a decent place overall, I didn't find it a particular value at about $170 night w/ tax during the winter. Also, the pool and spa were closed and it would have been nice to been told that when making the reservation.

Here is the main thing what I can't get past though. I noticed in the light of the morning, that our room had what looked like high velocity blood splatter on the ceiling over the bed, in the hallway and on the bathroom door. When we checked out I informed the woman at the desk who seemed mortified but it really made me feel like sitting in a tub of Lysol while sipping a vancomycin martini when I got home.

This hotel is tucked away at the top of Monterey street, so it's a long walk to downtown, but if you have a car then no problem. Friendly staff, good breakfast considering the reasonable cost. Highly recommended.

We stayed Monday night on a short notice trip from the SF bay area to meet with a real estate management firm. We had an internet rate of $70 for a two queen bed room which was roomy and clean. They have added the standard self serve waffles to the continental breakfast since we stayed last time. If you would rather have bacon & eggs you can walk across the street to the Apple Farm Inn. We have stayed here 3-4 times over the past 5 years and things have been consistent .

We stayed here several years ago, and had a nice stay, so when it came time to find a place near the Poly campus for one night (attending SOAR), I knew this place would be a better value than the other nearby hotels. San Luis Creek Lodge is a great place, and Apple Farm is fine, too, but both are pricey. The only one nearby we haven't checked is the Peach Tree Inn, which would have been about same rate for this stay...maybe next time. Anyway, we took Amtrak to town, 10 minute bus ride to this area, and easy walk (although it's uphill) to campus. Location is freeway close, and the town is small enough that your not far from anything, unless your on foot. Very safe and quiet area.
Breakfast here is nothing special, although my son really liked the do it yourself waffles. We saw other guests crossing the street to Apple Farm, always an excellent option, no matter where you stay in town.
Help yourself tea, coffee and cookies in the afternoon. Small pool, a little chilly, and warm spa. Free internet, a pleasure after being hit for $30 in internet charges in Vegas recently.

I feel sorry for whoever built the hotel, as it is just north of the freeway offramp, and the result is, that people coming from the north don't see it, while people browsing up Monterey St. from the south will usually find another place to stay. The result was, midwinter/midweek, the place was almost empty.

We were a little misled, as the AAA listing for La Cuesta claims it is within walking distance of downtown. Walking distance if you want to work off your lunch and part of your breakfast -- downtown is 1 1/2 miles away!

That said, the location is fine -- you can drive closer to downtown and maybe the walk is good for you. Service was good, the room (upstairs, with an elevator) was certainly OK, the beds were comfortable, and the breakfast, as I recall, included waffles. And most of the other places are not *that* much closer to the city center.

It's across the street from the Apple Farm, which has pretty good breakfasts. And not that far from the town's most popular Mexican restaurant.

We stayed at La Cuesta on our drive home to LA from San Francisco. So happens it was New Years Eve. We were pleased with our choice.

La Cuesta has a nice charm to it. The rooms are spacious and clean (although I did spot a little mold in the bathroom). The balconies off of the room is an added bonus. We also enjoyed having a DVD player in which you can get movies from the lobby to view.

When we arrived, cookies and tea were available in the lobby for guests--a nice touch. Continental breakfast is served from 6 - 10 a.m. Unfortunately, we slept in and missed the breakfast so I can't comment on the food.

It's just a straight shot into to town. We didn't go exploring this time around, but we've visited San Luis Obispo before and there is a lot to see and do. We did notice the trolley at the hotel that will take you into downtown.

The next time we visit, we'll definitely stay at this hotel.
