We were really looking to have some Asian noodles at the new Jin restaurant up Monterey street but were hugely disappointed. They had this huge television blaring and we couldn't even concentrate on the new menu so we left. Fortunately, we strolled a few blocks into town and stopped at Mee Heng Low. We were lucky to step in at just the right time as the table for two by the street window was open. Though it is a very small place we still normally are lucky enough to get a seat right away. The place was very busy last Friday night at 6.

I got the chow mien with tofu and my partner had another type of noodle with tofu and maybe a peanut sauce that was spicier than mine. The portion was ample and served quickly. Both meals were tasty and prepared very well. I love it when the broccoli still has a good crunch to it instead of being overcooked. It really hit the spot and we were so happy that we decided to go here instead of the new place. It's not fancy but it serves great noodles.

This place has really found its groove. I was a little worried in the early days, but the owner found his footing and has created both a menu and atmosphere that are inviting.

The menu is limited but there are specials and the items offered (mostly chop suey, chow mein, lo mein, all with a variety of sauces to choose from and soups) are prepared well using fresh ingredients. Sauces include Ginger Soy, Black Bean, Peanut Chili, and Sweet Plum. Love the ginger soy and peanut chili, the other two lack pizazz, as the main ingredients dominate.

The owner is an unusual character, charming in his own way. Jazz on Wednesdays upstairs is nice. Wine and beer are available.

(One weird thing: There's always pee on the toilet seat. I swear, it must be an employee with bad aim, because it is there every.single. time. I go there. What is up with that?)

Love the food, love the atmosphere. I dont know if they still do it, but they have awesome jazz music playing every Wednesday night, I would highly recommend it.

This restaurant has been in the same location, in the historic Chinese area of SLO, forever. It always had standard Chinese food that was pretty good. They have changed it into a "Noodle House", apparently to keep up with modern times. There is only ONE thing on the menu - noodles. No egg drop soup, no egg rolls. You can pick from noodles of three different shapes, type of meat/tofu/shrimp, and watery broth that it swims in. The veggies that come with it consist of bok choy, carrots, and one piece of broccoli and one piece of pepper. They had two specials - 1 salad and something with meat.

I got the widest noodles, and they tasted terrible and I couldn't eat it. They were egg noodles, which decidedly do not go with Chinese flavors. The lo mein was OK, but that's not what I wanted. I like the healthier bean thread or rice noodles. We had two noodle bowls, a beer and a glass of wine, and the bill was almost $50. I don't know how they can stay in business, and they should restore the old menu. Unfortunately, there aren't any good Chinese food places in SLO County, and this had been one of the better ones.
