First, if you are walking, be aware that there are many people biking fast on the same paved path. So though they are supposed to give way to you, I felt like we had to move aside quite a bit.
Also, apparently equestrians are allowed but no dogs? How silly is this? Horse poop on the path is a lot more difficult to deal with than a bit of dog poop, which can be collected in a bag. And if you're going to allow horses, dogs on leash should be permitted as well. So yet another park area discriminating against dogs.
Finally, it's a bit of stretch to say this is a "trail." I live in the East Bay and most parks our way have true dirt trails. This Sawyer one is paved all the six miles. The reservoir is lovely to look at but you must stay on the paved path. The entire area is fenced off and controlled by the county water board.

Great trail for training for runs with clear mile markers. Mostly flat and paved. Easily accessible from downtown San Mateo. Can get rather crowded on weekends and holidays. Go early or go on weekdays. Trail is shared with cyclists, runners and families pushing strollers. Be careful and exercise trail etiquette.

We came here in the spring and everything was so green. There's construction going on so you can't go through the whole loop. We wouldn't have done it anyways since we were just walking. There's still at least 6 miles of the loop you can do. Such a peaceful place and lots of benches around for rest. Two porta-pottys that we saw.

This is one of the best spots to hike/run/bike on the peninsula. The trail goes along the Crystal Springs reservoir, so you get amazing views.
The trail is well marked and paved, making it excellent for runners.
The only reason that I wouldn't give this an "excellent" rating is that it doesn't allow dogs on the trail. So, for those of you who want to exercise your dog as well, this isn't a great spot. Also, parking can be difficult at certain times of the day.
