This Japanese Restaurant is a local favorite, everything is fresh and artfully prepared. Fast and friendly, always busy but the wait is not long.

“Great sushi, decent prices, call ahead for a table”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2014

I have lived in San Mateo county since 1998 and for some reason hadn't tried Sushi Sam's until a year ago. I have a feeling it's because there was always a line and never bothered to wait.

Since my family loves sushi, this means that we've missed out on 15 years of GREAT sushi. What makes it great is that it's fresh and the price is decent. They offer traditional Japanese items on the menu but also some inventive rolls. It's also very casual so there's no need to get dressed up.

Go early or call ahead to reserve a table. If you can't do either, place your name on the list and walk around to scope out the area for dessert (then again, their desserts are tasty too). Sushi Sam's is worth the wait...just don't wait 15 years like I did or you'll miss out.

“Good for the price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2014

Sam's is a good choice for the price. It is not super fancy and the food is good, but no great. It is kind of like fast food sushi. They pack the place and turn tables quickly, but if money is the main object of your meal then this is a good choice. However, if you can get there for happy hour before six, go around the corner to pacific catch and you can get far better sushi for the same price.
