“Ok Place to Stay”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2007

I recently stayed at this hotel on business and found the hotel had a few issues but none that would prevent me from staying at it again. In an effort to keep my review short I will just simply list the plus and minus of the property.

Plus: free breakfast, free light dinner, free high speed internet, free internet service in the lobby if you do not have a computer. Free coffee is always availble. Complimentary news paper (US Today and San Francisoco paper). Fruit was always available in the lobby with no extra charge. Complimentary shuttle service from 8-8. Free pick up from the San Francisco airport. The room as a stove, large refrigerator, sink, microware and dishwasher. The room is set up like a suite but there is no privacy between the living room and bedroom. The room is set up more like a studio with a sleeper sofa. Oh, did I say free wine and beer in the evening.

Minuses: I would not recommend this property for a single female that is vacationing or traveling alone. There were just way too may bushes around the property that anyone can hide in. Housekeeping sometimes will ignore the magnetic sign that says "no service" that you can place on the outside of the door. I would recommend that you call the front desk or housekeeping to let them know directly that you do not want houskeeping service that day. This hotel is too far away from San Francisco if you plan on taking public transportation.

Other than what I listed above, my stay was very pleasant. This was one of the best Residence Inn's I have stayed at. The breakfast was outstanding and the keg of beer hit the spot the day they prepared hot wings for the light snack in the evening.

  • Liked — The room was very clean and spacious.
  • Disliked — Way too many bushes on the property.

Over time, I have found that the Residence Inn consistently delivers the goods. This property is no different. As usual, the room was spacious, clean, and well maintained. The parking is free and is close to your room. The breakfast is included, and has plenty of choices. It was a hit with my wife and 3 kids.

This property is in a nice area, with plenty of dining and shopping choices nearby. My family of 5 stayed in the "penthouse," which includes a sofabed in the living area, a queen bed in the bedroom, and another queen bed in the loft. The room had 2 bathrooms. Although I prefer the 2 bedroom layout , we found this arrangement to be satisfactory. I was also pleased that we didn't hear any noise from the neighboring rooms.

We used this hotel as a base for touring in San Francisco, and we were pleased to find that the trip into the city was quite easy. Had we known this when we booked the trip, we would have stayed in this hotel for all of our 5 nights, instead of spending 3 of them in a hotel in the city.

I think any family planning a trip to SF should consider this hotel, as long as you don't mind not being immersed in the urban SF setting.

  • Liked — Spacious and clean room with complimentary breakfast.
  • Disliked — Downstairs living area is somewhat cramped. Upstairs loft demands that you carry your suitcase up the stairs.

I stayed for 3 nights at the San Mateo Residence Inn in March, 2007 in a "penthouse" unit while repairs were made to my San Mateo home. The standard penthouse units are all on the second floor and have a loft bedroom and bath with a second bedroom and bath on the main floor with a pull-down Murphy bed. The second bedroom has a table and can be used as a meeting room or dining room. There is a full kitchen and a living room. The reported size of penthouse units is 750 sq. ft. There are two TVs.

The facility groups units in about 15-16 buildings of 8 units each. I selected a building (Building 6) in the interior of the complex and found it free of any freeway noise which might be heard in buildings on the perimeter.

My unit was clean and well-maintained inside and out. The facility is well lighted and has adequate parking fairly close to your unit. The HVAC worked well for both heating and cooling. The shower was good. The only interior noise was from the fan in the HVAC unit and from the refrigerator.

The complimentary buffet breakfast was good with attentive service. Scrambled eggs and either pancakes or French toast were offered during my stay, along with hot oatmeal, cold cereals, muffins and danish, etc. A snack-type evening meal also is provided, but I didn't try this. The evening menu posted on the refrigerator indicated that this could suffice for dinner. Free microwave popcorn of high quality is provided daily.

I found this to be a solid 3-star hotel and recomend it. I researched other places in San Mateo and this was my first choice. I would stay there again. It has good freeway and city street access.

  • Liked — Roomy and comfortable.
  • Disliked — No dislikes

Booked the hotel direct at a rate of $85 per night with a AAA discount. We chose this hotel because a family member lives in an adjoining neighborhood, we could walk to their house from the hotel. It was very convenient!

This was my first stay at a Marriott brand Residence Inn and we were quite impressed. The hotel room was spotless as well as the kitchenette, including the oven and refridgerator. The room television has HBO and around 30 television channels. There is no direct room service but complimentary cooked breakfast is served and for dinner one can order from a nearby restaurant that will bring the food to the hotel room. I cannot remember the specific restaurant name but my relatives say it is a good place to eat. The only negative was that the heater in our room was very loud, but you could keep the room nice and warm.

If one forgets little toiletries like a comb or toothpaste one can get them complimentary from the front check in desk. Another nice add on is that there is free internet service in the lobby so a traveler can print their airplane boarding pass. There is also complimentary tea and coffee service in the area.

For us there is no reason to stay at another hotel in the area. The price is right and the room is nice, 4* quality really when you add on all the extras at no additional cost. If there was a full restaurant with room service it would to me be worthy of a 4* rating. We will definitely visit again in the future.

  • Liked — nice large room
  • Disliked — heater noise
  • Tips/Secrets — stop by the lobby to enjoy complimentary coffee or tea

At $89 for a weekend rate, this seemed to be a good value in a good area. The room was clean and appeared to have been recently updated with newer carpet, the new Marriott beds/bedding, etc. The overall suite, the kitchen and the bathroom areas were spacious and quite functional. Biggest negative was that the front desk staff was either too busy or inattentive, or both - phone calls from the room regularly went unanswered, and the night clerk seemed engrossed in watching a football game in the lounge rather than staffing the check-in desk. The breakfast was typical expanded-continental quality, but during our stay, the unattractive breakfast room was filled to capacity and therefore an unpleasant experience. The grounds were bland, and the property backed to a fairly busy roadway, but our room was quiet.

Higly recommended especially for families. The inn also has some pet rooms but expect to place a large deposit. The hotel is a good value. Very clean and well maintained. Hotel is located in a nice neighborhood. Location is convenient to San Francisco, the coast, and eastern bay locations. Train service is minutes away in San Mateo (CalTrain) or San Bruno (Bart and Caltrain). If you take Caltrain, there is a bus across the street from the San Francisoc station that takes you cross town to all locations rather quickly. I think it was the 30 bus, but check the route. The airport is less than 10 minutres by car or taxi.

Stayed in a two floor suite. Bath, closet and bedroom upstairs. Bath, murphy bed and sofa bed downstairs. Fully equipped kitchen and fireplace. Dining area separate. Cable TV was good. Premises were quiet and parking convenient. Laundry is in main office building where washers and dryers are available 24/7. Outdoor pool and two jacuzzis. Exercise room was inadequate except for joggers. There is a supermarket five minutes away and some restaurants as well. San Mateo itself has a nice main street.

Breakfast was included with a large selection of dishes to choose from. Newspaper included. Room service is daily. If you are a Marriott member, I suggest you book through their website.

The photos on the Marriott website are accurate and respresent the property well.

  • Tips/Secrets — The nternet service is good but a bit slow.

We have had the most delightful experience to end our cross-country move. We found this little gem on the "West Bay" of the peninsula in a small town about 20 miles south of San Francisco.
This property is designed in condominium-style units which are grouped 4 to a building. There are walking paths, a small but useable pool, a basketball court which can also accommodate volleyball and the most amazing complimentary breakfasts that we have ever encountered!
We were at the facility because we have moved to the area and needed a place to stay while we awaited the arrival of our belongings. Not only did we have teenaged boys, but we also had our elderly dog with us. The facility was pet-friendly, though I would recommend asking for a downstairs unit if your pet is older, and offered plenty of activity for our sons who enjoy "shooting hoops" and swimming.
Our unit was a 2-story loft which had a king bed upstairs in the loft and a queen size "murphy bed" in the main floor. There is a small but fully equipped kitchen and a nice fireplace downstairs along with an eating area, office space and very comfortable furniture. There are two full baths, one on each floor, so you don't have to climb the stairs to the loft each time you needed the facilities, which was nice as the stairs are a little steep.
The best part of this facility are the lush, tropical plants which give you the feeling of being not on the continental US, but more like a carribbean location. Even though the property is adjacent to a very busy thoroughfare, and we had an end-unit, we were unaware of the traffic except when emergency vehicles passed, which was not often. I am sure that the plantings help to shield you from the traffic noises, as they are lush and dense.
I would highly recommend this facility to anyone who is planning to visit the San Francisco area. Drivers can reach the city proper in about 20 minutes, and excellent public transportation is available as an alternative from right outside of the hotel. There is a shopping center around the corner where you can find restaurants and discount stores for any supplies. After the hustle and bustle of the city all day, this would be an excellent place to go and "recharge" for the next day.
