There was a service going on so I didn't get to wander around. From what I saw of it on the outside and a bit on the inside, it's a beautiful mission. Definitely worth a stop.

One of the Historical California Missions. Lovely. The architecture and rich Hispanic history which predates statehood.

Too bad its been changed to accommodate the new mass. This hurt the feeling of history that should attach to the building.

My recollection -- possibly faulty, I'll grant you -- of other missions such as Mission San Carlos, Mission Santa Clara, etc., was one of ornate beauty inside the churches. About an hour before visiting Mission San Rafael, I had visited Mission Dolores, which is phenomenally beautiful and reminiscent of the churches of Europe, but with a Hispanic/Native twist.

So with that as a reference point, the interior of Mission San Rafael can't help but disappoint. I was looking for Baroque-like beauty; I got Trappist simplicity.

In the end, such considerations don't matter. Jesus is reserved in the Blessed Sacrament on the altar's tabernacle. That is the most important thing. In that sense, it is a great, quiet place to pray.

The woman running the gift shop was abrupt and rude to my 13-year-old daughter, but they were having a 45% off sale on some decent items. Some of the stuff, however, was way overpriced.

If you want a great experience of a mission, go with Mission Dolores. True the tour costs $5/person ($3 for children), but it is at least educational and there is beauty and peace in abundance.

Its one blocks from the main happenings in san rafeal.
great place if you need to get away for a half hour from the ecclecticness of SR, busy Marin traffic.
(Seems everyone is in a hurry these days.)
this church will help you slow down and connect with God and your own heart. JOY!
