“One of the worst places I've encountered”
Reviewed 23 March 2009

Please stay away from this place, we did not have any advance reservations and left the hotel search until way too late. We were tired and pulled into this place. Sleeping in the car would have been better! The front desk clerk was indifferent and tardy. He was watching something on TV in the other room and took a while responding to the bell at h the front desk, he charged us $118 plus tax for a distasteful overnight stay. He commented we were really going to like the room because it had a whirlpool. Well this tub was pink-coloured as with the other bathroom fixtures so you can guess the age of it, and you couldn't have payed me to ever think of using it. Somehow in the room there was a gouge on the floor covered by a worn out dingy suspiciously stained carpet, the bed covers and room decor was perhaps original ? Questionable looking people meeting in the parking lot, we didn't even feel comfortable going out to get something from the car. So take our advice and plan your trip and avoid this place. The advertise Breakfast included we avoided, it included coloured cereal in a jar and plastic wrapped sugar coated dough bits, coffee took one taste before discarding.

This is a 1^ 1950's motor in masquerading as a 2* on priceline. Small small rooms, worn bedspreads, - doors open onto parking lot, lots of airspace around door, cheap windows with cheap locks. The windows in the first TWO rooms did not even lock. Loud between rooms and floors (cheap old walls) . No lobby space except what one would expect in a 1950's motor inn. Gross cereal bins ( I suppose that is what they call "continental breakfast"). Loud noises from parking lot and facing businesses are your constant companion.

A couple of the rooms had upgraded vanity and shower surround - but our president elect got it right when he talked about "lipstick on a pig " . You can dress up a cheap old motor inn only so much.

Do yourself a favor and stay at the Extended Stay down the street - it's also rated a 2* on priceline but it is a huge step up - safer, cleaner, quieter, larger rooms, great lobby and breakfast area. Night and day.

Dirty, Dirty hotel! The bathroom smelled like urine! The room never got completely dark because the gas station/parking lot that the bathroom overlooks never goes out. The front door had huge gaps around it, was paper thin, and if someone really wanted to get in, I am sure they could have pushed the door open. This hotel claims to have a “no pet” policy – but I woke up having trouble breathing, breaking out in hives and itching- and then found cat hair in the bed. I had to leave to go to the hospital and they refused to refund my money or give me a receipt. Overall the WORST hotel experience I have EVER had!

  • Liked — That I left!!!!!
  • Disliked — Everything- but the urine smell took the cake!

At first we (my girlfriend and me) were going to stay there only for two nights but we found the place lovely (very clean, good breakfast, great swimmingpool) and we stayed an additional night. Stuff were a little bit sharp with us but polite. San Rafael is a very good placed to stay if you want to visit the San Francisco bay area and I hardly recommend this motel which is not expensive for what they offer.

For 2 adults and 2 teenagers in a room with 2 Queen beds we paid $167 after tax - we felt totally ripped off. The rooms were supposedly renovated but the bathroom was just given a very sloppy paint job, right over the mold an gunge. The carpets were dirty, especially in the outer walkways which were out-and-out filthy. Our fridge didn't work. The beds were not very comfortable and the bedspreads smelled unclean. The area was noisy and unattractive. The manager was unpersonable. The "continental breakfast" didn't even come close to the ones provided at the much cheaper hotels we had previously stayed at - the one at the Holiday Inn the previous night was infinitely better. I had booked this hotel because the reviews I read were ok. We expected a clean, generic hotel but this one was substandard. I won't stay here again.

We booked 2 rooms for $25 each. It must have been a pricing error because the front desk clerk kept asking for the date we booked the rooms. Anyway, it's great value for $25, because the rooms were big (at least compared to Motel 6 rooms), the bathroom was clean, the tv had several cable channels, and there was a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, and hairdryer. In the morning, complimentary coffee, juice, and pastries were available at the front desk.

The bedroom floors could use some vacuuming, though. One of the rooms had what looked to be glitter on the carpet between the bed and the night table. Also, the front desk clerk wasn't friendly. However, these things didn't really bother us considering the price we paid.

It was a short drive over to San Francisco, so that was also a plus.

  • Liked — The amenities in the room, the clean bathroom, and the price.
  • Disliked — The floors could be cleaned better.

My wife and I needed a hotel room for a week close to the retirement home where my mother lives. We were celebrating her 90th birthday with lots of people coming. Normally, I would have stayed with her or in a guest room at the Tamilpais.

Our flight was delayed over three hours and we did not arrive at the Travelodge until after 3 AM. We could not rouse anyone via the service button outside the little lobby, which was locked. We called a Travelodge central number, and they could not rouse anyone. We spent the night at a Motel 6 a block up the road. It was not a room we could tolerate for a week, so we returned to the Travelodge in mid-morning. The room was small with one queen bed. It was clean and had a coffee pot, frig, and safe. The room was quiet, but the heating was very loud when operating. We got one coffee ring per day. Could have used extra pillows but didn't get them. The shelf above the frig was broken. The free Internet worked okay. The provided breakfast in the lobby consisted of juice and coffee, sweet rolls, apples and bananas. They had free USA Today papers.

Although the neighborhood is not nice and is industrial, there are plenty of good stores and services nearby, and the Seafood Peddler restaurant just up the road is very good. A large group of us had one of my mother's birthday dinners there.

(The big bash was on the previous Saturday night to accomodate those people who could only come over the weekend.}

One week was too long in such a motel and I could not do it again. The price was right and it would be okay for a night or two.

  • Liked — Quiet, despite nearby freeways, TV, Internet, location was good for us
  • Disliked — Minimal, unreliable service, disappointing breakfast.
