“Long Lines, but the Best Meal in San Rafael”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

Sol Food Puerto Rican Cuisine is almost iconic in Marin County's largest city of San Rafael. Located just off of 4th Street in downtown, the fresh mix of ingredients, flair, and lively atmosphere make this in all likelihood THE MOST POPULAR restaurant in all of Marin. The lines out the door can mean a 45 minute to 1 hour wait, but the food is worth it! Fresh plantains cooked in a myriad of ways, options for vegetarians, gluten free options, seating at tables with other patrons, and lively colors all make for a memorable and festive night of dining. Take Out locations are located just next door and around the corner for patrons wanting to indulge their taste buds in their own homes. Prices are reasonable (not cheap, not expensive) and the mix of real, interesting, and hip individuals you will meet during your meal make this a must for anyone visiting or living in Marin.

“Crowded, but rightfully so”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

Our go to place when in San Rafael....typically there is always a line out the door, so be prepared to wait, but the wait is oh so worth it! Great to see new cuisine aside from the typical Mexican food offerings. Menu here is varied, and there is something for everyone...all well done and flavorful....the costillas are excellent as are any of the shrimp dishes. The plantains are always a delight.

“Sooooo tasty!”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

I LOVE the food here. Favorites are the camarones empanizados (with great garlic dipping sauce) and bisctec encebollados. The sweet and the garlic fried plantains are both great. The roast chicken is very tender, not dry at all. Amazing sparkling limeade too! We eat here more than once a week and it is consistently great.

Camarones Empanizados. That's really all I have to say. This place blows the top of your skull from your head. That's how good it is.

“Loved the plantains - you will too!”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

Found this place when attending a conference in San Rafael. Puerto Rican restaurants are not all that common where I'm from so made a point to stop in while in town. Great stuff. This place seems to be hopping all the time. Wife and I showed up at dinner time on Saturday to a line of about 30 deep. As there was just two of us we were able to get in sooner as we agreed to sit at the bar at the window facing out. The Bistec Sandwich seems to be a favorite, really good. Also particularly enjoyed the Mango and Orange Iced Tea. Not to be missed. Another suggestion is the Tostones Con Queso with tomatoes (Fried plantains with cheese and tomatoes). And pretty much any of the many plantain dishes or sides they offer (and are famous for). Highly recommend when in the area.
