This was our Big Sur stay and the sea was impressive and the sands by the sea was very convenient for our two night stay , right on the highway and ideal for visiting Hearst Castle , the elephant seals and the interesting village of Cambria which is theCeltic name for Wales . . Rooms were fine and had seen better days but well serviced and clean! We were given a 3 dollar voucher next door at the Best Western, don't bother with their 3 dollar meal in the morning ,use the voucher towards their breakfast.

Stopped in for a night whilst on a road trip visiting Hearst Castle, Rooms were clean and the service was good! At night there were some great bonfires on the beach to sit and enjoy the scenery and chilly ocean breeze. Not much else to do here but it was more than adequate for a nights stay.
Would stay again.

We just stayed overnight at this hotel, hotel is situated in a great location next to restaurants and of course the beach. The hotel offers a heated pool, pool was clean but not kept hot, it was at around 72 degrees or so. We had a double room, the room has Microwave, fridge and coffee maker with TV. I want to say Hotel staff is very helpful and attentive to customers, overall i would stay here again and would recommended it.

We stayed for one night in the Sam's by the sea hotel last night. As the name states--Sands-yes – view of the sea – no. While we found the desk clerk very friendly, everything from that point forward went downhill. The hotel is actually surrounded by one of the competitor hotels so there is no way to see the sea. As soon as we open the door to the room a very strong odor struck us. We could not turn on the air conditioning to get the odor out of the room-- because there was no air-conditioning. The draperies were ripped but still hanging on the curtain rods – the wallpaper was ripped and torn in many spots – this place is in serious need of renovation or restoration or even modernizing. While they advertise on their website that they provide breakfast in the morning, what they actually do is give you a slip good for a 4oz. of glass of juice and coffee or a three dollar value toward a real breakfast. This coupon could only be used at the restaurant next-door.

Please do yourself a favor by staying in one of the other hotels in that area. We stayed in the Best Western on a previous trip, and wish we had stay there again.

Stayed one night in Sands by the Sea and enjoyed it thoroughly. We had partial ocean view and the sounds of ocean's waves coming through the window in the morning were priceless. The rooms are adequate for the price and motel rating. Staff is friendly and accommodating. The best part was the park in front of the ocean. Magical nature, waves crushing the shores, campfires by the beach at night made it a great stop in San Simeon.

We stayed at this hotel for one night on our way North to from LA to Mendocino County. For the price we didn't have very high expectations, but after staying at more expensive Moonstone Beach Motels for years we were ready for a change. The woman who checked us in was very nice, and she gave us a couple of options on rooms to choose from.
Our room (230) was fantastic. It had radiant floor heat, which for us is a huge deal. We really dislike those loud forced-air heaters that most hotel chains use, which makes our sinuses feel like bloody Triscuits by the morning. The king bed was really firm, and the sheets & comforter were clean and very warm. It was drizzling the morning we left, so it was nice to wake up all toasty. Plus, there's a microwave and a fridge in each room! Also, they have a heated indoor pool which looked great, but we didn't have time to check out. Basically, this place was way better than staying at crowded and noisy Moonstone Beach.
Extra credit points: On the morning we were leaving, there was a power outage in San Simeon, so we were sort of feeling our way around the room as we packed. I left my laptop charger in the room, and they UPS'ed it to me the next day! Fantastic service from a very clean and comfortable Motel.
We will definitely be back.

This property is very neat, clean, and well-maintained. Proximity to Hearst Castle is terrific. The rooms are a bit small, and the amenities are a bit lacking compared to three- or four-star properties. (E.g., the entranceway is a bit dark, because there is no hallway light. There are only three small drawers under the TV stand, so there's not much room to unpack your stuff. The hanging light over the tiny table in the corner is placed in just the wrong position, making it very awkward to use that table.) Beds were fine, with new looking linens and bedspreads. Bathroom was clean.
As others have noted, the front office staff is very good. The evening after I left, I realized I'd left a few items in one of the drawers. I called the motel and explained the situation. It took them a couple of days to find my stuff, but the staff was unfailingly polite and persistent. They shipped my items back to me in two days, and simply billed my credit card for the postage. No fuss, no muss, and nice service.
This is a good moderate-cost alternative in San Simeon. The room is a bit cramped for a long stay, but it's fine for a night or two.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back (closer to the beach), which is further from Highway 1, and should be qui...
