“Low cost but....”
Reviewed 5 September 2006

Choose this one as it was one of the only low cost accommadation choices we could find. Would not stay here again, but in saying that would struggle to have paid the difference in cost with another place. Dirty, unhelpful staff and basic breakfast was provided but not before 7 am!

Definately recommend the experience tour of Hearst Castle while you are in San Simeon.

Our stay here was just a pitstop on our way to Big Sur and then to San Francisco. I was a little disappointed by the view (photos portray the ocean as being RIGHT across the street), lack of landscaping (don't believe the photos, again) and room decor. Very 70's. Overall the room had a musty smell but was comfortable. The restaraunt is VERY overpriced even though motel guests get a 10% discount. However, the price for the room was good and it was fun to walk on the beach. Sunbathers beware; the beach is very rocky but is beautiful at sunset.

  • Liked — room rate, proximity to Highway 1
  • Disliked — musty smell, overpriced food
  • Tips/Secrets — avoid the hotel restaraunt; there are decent eats on the west side of highway 1.

Date of Stay 7/23/06: We spent the night at the San Simeon Lodge before going to Hearst Castle. The lodge is in a nice location close to the castle. We enjoyed the fact that the lodge had a refrig. and microwave. This allowed us to save a little money be picnicing while on vacation. The lodge DOES NOT have A/C. (this was the second hotel on our trip that didn't have a/c) We stayed during the heat wave and could have used an extra fan or even a/c to make our sleep more comfortable. The Lodge is decorated in late 70's or early 80's decor (think the Golden Girls) but it was comfortable.

We did feel safe being two women traveling alone and would stay there again.

The ocean was down the drive and across hwy 1 down another little road and down steps to the beach. Hearst State Park is just down the road and offers picnic sites as well as a swimming beach.

We initially chose this resort because they claimed to have beach access from across the street. They don't tell you that the street in question is HWY 1! Not exactly safe to be running across with a 4 year old. This same four year old has not bathed in 2 days because the shower (yes, there was NO bath tub) in our room either scalded or froze you. It was too much to ask my child to go through. We were on the second floor and had to listen to screaming children until I complained at 10pm each night when the pool was finally closed. [Locals who show up to play pool decided it would be an excellent opportunity for the family to jump in the pool fully clothed and romp around!] Eating at the motel's restaurant is an experience! The outrageous prices do not match the poor quality of the food. You should receive an automatic discount for having to look at the Egyptian/Hawaiian/Mexican/Karaoke Bar decor. Our final morning we tried to have breakfast delivered to our room, and were told that there was not going to be anyone working to deliver until 10am.

Save your money and sleep in the car before staying here!

I stayed here with my family July 24th. We were surprised at how nice it was. I read the other reviews on this site and got mixed feelings about how it would really be. Come on people, its a 2 star motel. I've stayed at many Hotels, Motels, B&B's all over here and in Europe and was very happy with this lodge. The rooms were clean, yes the bathrooms were a bit outdated, but clean, and again 2 star!! They had a nice warm pool that my children loved. There is a beach across the Highway ! and it's walking distance, very close. We ate breakfast at the on site restaurant. My family was pleased with their meals (eggs etc) mine was a waffle, a bit too crispy. I would return to the San Simeon Lodge.

Went online and veiwed photos, the lodge looked clean, quaint with beautiful gardens and was "by the ocean", got there and it looked sparse, rundown and poorly maintained. looked in several rooms that were being cleaned and was greatly dissappointed, furniture and carpet were worn, and these rooms could of used paint and just general maintenance. My encounter with the staff was that they were slow, somewhat rude and generally didn't care. They showed us a room and it looked the same as the others. Even though we had arrived at just past midday we were told we could not cancel our online reservations nor could we pay just a cancellation fee and still payed the full fee. My girlfriend and I left and checked into another room that was on the ocean, had a fireplace and turned out to be a very good experience for a very slight amount of more money. I felt that the online photos of this place were not indicative of the motel at all.
